Sioux Falls - Sylvia Miles, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 11, 2021 at Ava's House Hospice, just three days before her 87th birthday. She had been a resident of Prince of Peace Nursing Home for the past three years. Her funeral service will be Friday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home in downtown Sioux Falls, with burial following at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will be Thursday, January 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Sylvia Arlene Haugse was born January 14, 1934 in Florence, MN, to Albert and Isabelle (Ronning) Haugse. She was the second of seven children. She graduated from Tyler, MN High School and received her teaching degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. She spent many years as a teacher and educator in the Sioux Falls Public Schools.
She was united in marriage to Harold L. Miles on June 20, 1959 at Christ the King Catholic Church, where they were members for many years. Their family grew to include one daughter, Jennifer Miles, and two grandchildren, Andrew Ruf and Jessica Ruf.
Also grateful for having shared her life are her siblings, Audrey DeWitt (Sioux Falls), A. Leonard Haugse (Ohio), Kenneth Haugse (Sioux Falls), Yvonne Silvis (Florida), and their spouses and families, along with many other relatives and dear friends. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Harold on May 22, 2012, her parents, and siblings Jim Haugse and Janet Kaufman.
Sylvia was a Type 1 diabetic for 58 years. Memorials may be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. www.millerfh.com
