George E. McKibben, who taught at Jonesboro Junior High School in Clayton County, died April 7, 2020.He was 76.

The Clayton County school district said in a post on Facebeook that it recognized McKibben in 2018 for his impact on the community because, in 1967, he became one of the first black teachers to teach at a white Clayton County school.

"During his first year, McKibben began to open doors that substantially eased the acceptance of black students and teachers in what had been white-only schools in the county," the district wrote.

McKibben taught at Jonesboro Junior High for 11 years. He then helped open Mundy's Mill Middle School, where he drew the Razorback mascot on a wall of a hallway.

It is with sadness that I write this. I've known George most of my life. We both grew up in Forest Park, GA and attended the same elementary and high school. George and my brother, Benjamin Williams were classmates ahead of me. It doesn't surprise me that George had a stellar career as an educator. I last saw George at our high school breakfast reunion in 2019 where all graduating classes came together.

My sincere condolences to his lovely wife, daughters and other family members. George is sorely missed by all those he came in contact with as he had a great impact on so many lives. Rest In Peace, power and love. Your life was well lived and you touched so many lives in an awesome way.

My heart was so saddened upon hearing of Mr. McKibben's transition. I knew him as a church member and always admired seeing him and Mrs. Alvenese when I greeted them in the vestibule on Sundays. It is such a blessing to hear how much he loved his family because it was very evident when I saw them together. God bless and comfort you all during this time. Jackie Malone

So sorry for the loss of this wonderful man. I met George at Frank Bailey Senior Center, and he quickly became one of my favorite friends there. I never saw George without a smile on his face. He laughed, he joked, and he was always surrounded by people. He was one of those people who always made you forget your troubles for a little while. His laugh could be heard above the noise. George was a kind and encouraging friend. Wherever he went the atmosphere suddenly became lighter and more positive. He was much loved, and will always be missed. God bless you, his dear family.

He was more like a family member than a friend. Since the life that he lived speaks for him, I believe that he is resting in the arms of the Lord.

I pray that God gives you the strength to endure the days ahead. Much love, Brenda Adams

I knew George from a little girl when we were growing up in Forest Park, GA. Always admired him for continuing his education and being a role-model to the young people in our neighborhood. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with him on our Fountain High Alumni Breakfast August 2019. We were just preparing to schedule our planning meetings for 2020 when COVID-19 swept around the world. I talked to George just before what would have been our first 2020 meeting on March 22, 2020 to let him know that the meeting had been cancelled. His last words to me was, I'll see you at the next meeting at your house. We will miss him. My condolences to the family from The Fountain High Alumni Breakfast Committee 2020.
