Jim with others at the Atlanta Families Surprise Day at HMES May 2017
To the entire McMahan family,
I am deeply saddened by your loss and all that you are going through at this extremely difficult time. As the former principal of Henderson Mill Elementary School, I had the pleasure of working with Jim since January of 2014. Over the course of those 4 1/2 years, I consistently saw the man that he truly was, a champion for the students of DeKalb County School District, an ardent supporter of our Lakeside Cluster, a leader in the community, and a dedicated family man. Jim continuously exhibited a contagious positivity. He raised others up through compliments that encouraged them to be even more than they already are, and he was always willing to drop everything to attend to the needs of others.

His way of being will continue to guide my future actions and interactions. His leadership by example was truly second to none. I wish you comfort in the memory of the man that Jim was and the lasting legacy that he created that will continue to bare fruit into the future.

My heart goes out to the McMahan family. I had the pleasure of working with Jim on a number of education related issues. I will always remember how Jim conducted himself... a strong focus on students while keeping a light-hearted perspective. In other words, taking issues, not himself, seriously. Jim will be missed.

I am a member of the Lakeside family. I remember Jim's joy when he lit the bonfire four years ago at our Homecoming Pep Rally. I remember Jim's speech from the podium of the World Congress Center at Maddie's graduation. He expressed his love of his family and his commitment to service so clearly. Jim lived life large. And, so, his passing is a shocking loss for many, but none of us can comprehend the staggering weight you have been given to carry.

For now, Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.(Proverbs 3:5) I pray that God will send the love and support you will need through the wisdom of Nan's doctors and through the love of family and friends. The Lakeside community will be ready to give back when the time is right.

Dear Susan, Maddie, and Nan,

I don't know you but we go to the same church, and more importantly worship the same, one true God. There is nothing I can say or do, but I can and have talked to God and asked Him to be with you every second and provide for your every need. I know He has, He is, and He will. May you feel HIs presence in a very real way and gain strength from all those He sends to be angels of mercy to you.

We will hold his family in our love and take care of them.
Jimmy Mac, I will miss you but know I will see you again on the other side.

I met Jim years ago when I was serving as faculty representative on the Lakeside school council. I always admired Jim's dedication, his knowledge and his good cheer. When he found out that I had graduated from Northside high School, his alma mater, he immediately invited me to a "Buckhead Boys" meeting. He was a great public servant and -from what I know - a great father and husband as well. This is indeed a terrible loss for all of us.

Ric here. I met Jim at the Jekyll Island golf gathering once a year in April. Know that all my love and heartfelt prayers are with you all (his family) during this most difficult time. I've suffered much loss, too, in my life. Grieve, cry, and keep being with loved ones. Best I know is that you won't ever get "over" this ... but you can get "through" it. Love you all (and I don't need to know your names or to even have met you to share my love with you).

Jim has been a real friend and respected colleague during our time of mutual service, he on the DeKalb County Board of Education and me on the Fulton County Board of Education. We often sought advice from each other, and I so valued his insight and thoughtfulness. His family was the joy of his life, and I know how proud he was of his wife and his girls. I cannot imagine the loss you are feeling, but I hope that these testaments to Jim's character and positive outlook on life will be a comfort to you during this difficult time and that his memory will be a blessing and inspiration for you. I will miss his smile, his quick wit and his friendship.
