John Marshall Obituary

Dr. John D., Marshall Jr., 74, a family-practice doctor in Americus for more than three decades, contracted COVID-19 from a patient, family members said. Marshall died Wednesday, Aug. 12, after spending 111 days on a ventilator, apparently the first practicing Georgia physician killed by the novel coronavirus.

Marshall was an Air Force veteran, a one-time pharmaceutical salesman, a former president of an NAACP chapter and the publisher of a monthly newspaper, the Americus Sumter Observer, which covers the African-American community in the Southwest Georgia town.

Omg I’m in shock, one of the best doctors I know. May his soul be at peace. He had an amazing sense of humor, and when ever I had an appt we talked like there was no tomorrow. I’m really grateful for him and the care he provided to me.

Dr. Marshall was a wonderful doctor, and I was blessed to have him manage my healthcare through three years of very hard times. Dr. Marshall was also a family friend, as he knew my brother, McCall Calhoun professionally, as well as, my mother, JoAnn LeSueur Chappell. Our family is very saddened by Dr. Marshall’s passing, and we have his family in our constant thoughts and prayers.

I would like to say that Dr. John D. Marshall had the best bed side manners as a doctor. He was not only a doctor, but your friend. He served the whole person and he loved people. He was a "special" physician. We will never find another Dr. John D. Marshall, he was special made by God. I loved him. I am going to miss him and I thank his family for sharing him with the southwest Georgia community. He served more than Sumter County, he served us in Lee County-Smithville as well. We love you!!!

On behalf of the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Physicians, I write to express our shared sense of loss at the passing of Dr. John D. Marshall, Jr. and to celebrate his immense contributions to the health, well-being, and character of your family and community. As I read of
Dr. Marshall’s accomplishments and self-sacrificing service to his patients and community, his work inspired me as a physician and a Georgian.

I met Dr Marshall 29 years ago when he diagnosed me with diabetes. He always reminded me of how important it is to take care of myself and to keep my numbers down. I was in his office 2 weeks before he got sick, he was laughing, talking junk as usual and just so full of life. Never would have known that would be my last time seeing him. My heart is so broken knowing that he's no longer with us. He was the best doctor and I'm really going to miss him. Rest on Dr. Marshall. Love you.

To Doctor Marshall's Family
He not only earned his degree to practice doctoring ... he was born with the gift from God created in his mother's womb
He would not allow me to leave his office one visit until my BP &glucose was at a satisfactory level and while attending to other patients he still checked in on me and with a smile he said no not yet while I was impatient he was ever so calm and then explained to me eating 1/2 of fruits & diet sodas are full of sugar and what " they" are not telling me...I thank God for his help because the info help saved my life that day God has angels to protect his children and Doctor Marshall performed his job and duties ...Let us continue to worship the Lord in spirit and truth!!!

Dr. Marshall will truly be missed. He took care of myself, my mother and my twin, Deltra. His eyes lit up when my sister and I came to his office. My sister would make him laugh so hard. He was the most kind, caring and humble man and doctor in Americus. He will be truly missed.

Dr. Marshall was my doctor, my friend, and a colleague in the fight for justice in Americus-Sumter County, Georgia. In the 15 years he and I walked with one another in the NAACP and Prison & Jail Project, I learned so much from Dr. Marshall. I learned about courage, persistence, righteous indignation, and the effectiveness of collaboration in any Civil Rights movement. I will miss him deeply, but he will always be among my cloud of witnesses.

So saddened to hear of the loss of Dr. Marshall. We mourn his loss of he meant so much to the people of Americus. Not only was he a healer, of the body, but he was also a fierce advocate of social justice. He cared deeply about the plight of African Americans who he recognized as still being marginalized as second-class citizens deep in South Georgia's Black Belt. Those sentiments appeared monthly in the newspaper he published, the Americus Observer. He was an ardent supporter of our efforts to establish the Americus Civil Rights Center and Museum at the Historic Americus Colored Hospital building that is being rehabilitated. I will miss as well, our occasional chats over the phone on issues of the day. Rest in Peace, Dr. Marshall.

Oh, I will miss my friend JD. I think about the times we spent together on SSC campus. We would go off campus for lunch. If you wanted to ride in JD's car, you had to sign a paper stating you were riding at your own risk, ha, ha, ha. When we came home to Savannah for the holidays, JD would always ask to check my perscription bottles and we would talk about my health. JD is with the Almighty now at peace, no pain.
