Memories and Condolences
for Kay Yow

Not sure what to say?

Just wish to say that I met Coach in 1985 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The second time I ran into her she knew my name. She was the type of person you felt you had known her all your life. If a person goes through life and meets someone like her then you had a special life. She was warm and friendly and first rate classy. I know she is now in the hands of God.

Kay Yow,

We never knew each other personally, however, I feel inspired to write this to you. I too have battled breast cancer and have gone through the dark desperate feelings that one goes through during this disease. Luckily, I was lucky enough to make it through, somehow.

I am humbled when I see how many people love and respect you for not only your battle with cancer, but the overall love that you give to every one you have met. You are truly an inspiration to me and I will always strive to be somebody like you. I made a promise to God that if I made it through cancer, I would do my best to give of myself to others and to give as much love as I can to all those around me. And I see you as the perfect role model to be that kind of person.

Thank You for being a beacon of light to everyone you have touched.

After watching the videos from Kay Yow's service I am inspired to write here in the guest book. I worked FCA basketball camp with Kay Yow in Marshall, IN for several years in the early 80's. It was incredible to me then (and still is) that she would stop everything to drive more than 10 hours to work a small basketball camp in Indiana. She was SO humble and SO funny. I would practice my Kay Yow accent so that I could imitate her at camp each summer. She was a very special person and I'm so honored to have known her.

I just heard of Kay Yow today on the 700 Club TBN. I admire her for encouraging us here in this life to keep serving Jesus, as she was saying her good bye's to all fellow believers. I believe she is in the arms of her and our Savior Jesus Christ.

As a new Campus Crusade for Christ staff member at NC State, it was thrilling to attend a State/UNC football game in the fall of 1975. In the game program, all the NCSU coaches were pictured. Kay Yow was (I recall) the only woman coach on the page. I bowed right then and asked God to use me in her life and to use her to influence others. The next week I walked into her office...and that is where her testimony begins.

Although it was uncomfortable to hear my name in her video testimony, the whole service was such a glorious celebration of what God can do in and through the life of one who truly loves Him. There she was: ALREADY IN HEAVEN and making an extraordinary effort to bring as many people with her as possible.

I am a breast cancer survivor and greatly appreciate all Kay's efforts to cure 'the beast'. Those efforts will continue and one day...it will be Cancer that dies.

This website reminds me that Kay doesn't have to imagine anymore what Heaven will be like.

I always admired Kay Yow as the NC State Girls Basketball Coach. She brought great honor to our US Olympic game as well.

I was so touched by her determination to live her life to the fullest each and every day until her last. It was so obvious she gave so much of herself to others and her causes.

I watched her Memorial service today on TV and was so touched by her message to us all. Hearing her wonderful stories, her words of wisdom and the spiritual message she sent to us all in her last words.

I for one felt God in my heart today like never before. Kay's own words she videoed for her memorial was so powerful!! Her message will remain with me and be in my heart for the rest of the days of my life.

God Bless and R.I.P. Coach!

Dear Family of Coach Yow,

Having lived in Rhode Island my entire life, I knew nothing about NC State and Coach Yow until two years ago when I happened to tune in to one of the womens' basketball games. During a break in the action, the announcers spoke about the recurrence of Coach Yow's illness. Since then I have followed Coach Yow's progress and the team. I feel as though I have lost a member of my family. May she rest in peace.

Wow. I'm so sorry the world has lost a legend. She made such a contribution to history through her career and battle with cancer. We see she never allowed her fight get in her way of helping. Her example should have some impact on all of our lives, especially for those of us who are women. Her courage through her battle will help Kay's influence be that much greater. Even though she lost this one, she will not be forgotten. John 5:28,29/Acts 24:15. May we await the day when we will see her again. I hope that her family is so very proud of her and that they will take care of one another in this difficult time. May you throw your grief and sadness upon God because he cares for you (1Peter 5:7) and lean on the strength he supplys (2Corinthians 4:7). I am so sorry for your loss.

I have followed articles about the Coach for awhile now. I lost my Mom in 1987 after a 13 year battle with breast cancer. Our oldest daughter went to Montana State to play basketball. Coach Yow had incredible courage and perserverance and she left that mark, it is clear, on everyone she touched. Thank you for sharing her with us.

It occurred to me that the inscription on Francis(Aunt Bea) Bavier's tombstone would be very appropriate for Coach Kay Yow. It reads, "To live in the hearts of those left behind is not to die". Coach Yow certainly lives on in the hearts of many! She was a teacher and teachers "touch the future", as the saying goes. Her lessons will be passed on to many future generations. May she rest in peace but her work go on.

I was a student at the University of South Carolina from 1976-80, During the 1978-79 season, I announced Lady Gamecocks Basketball games on the campus radio station. It was my desire to do this professionally, so I took the role very seriously.

In those days, the regional tournaments to get to the nationals were by invitation. I recall the one in Tennessee, when I got to interview Pat Head (later Summitt)and Kay Yow, who had the title of "co-coach".

Not sure who that was, but it was Kay who came to my table at halftime for a nice interview. It did not matter that it was a college radio station. She treated me like she did everybody - with respect.

We talked about the rise of women's college basketball, which was just starting to explode. Now that I look back, it was major highlight n my radio career, though I did not get paid for doing the game.

I now do a volunteer all-night DJ for a local Relay for Life, supporting the continued quest for a cure to Breast Cancer.

This year (Mother's Day Weekend) will be an extra special event for me. I will tell Kay's story from my perspective.

Kay Yow is an inspiration to a generation that came of age in the 1970s. I am among many students who were fortunate to have benefited from her good grace on campus.

Kay created real teams from an array of disparate and exceptional athletes. Kay also remained true to her roots as a good teacher, displaying a knack for recognizing the good things that can be coaxed out of each student.

Through this good work, she presented all of us with a glimpse of what we could become if we pull together for the common good.

Congratulations on a life well lived, dangers well met. And thank you for all that you have shared with us.

I have had the honor and good fortune to know Kay and her family for many years. The Hilton Yow family has to be one of the most remarkable in ways beyond the usual.

Kay's parents were like parents to me. They were the kind of parents we would all want if we had a choice. I mourned deeply when they died.

Kay's brother, Ronnie, her sisters, Debbie and Susan, each are no less remarkable in their own way.

I am deeply saddened by this family's loss but I know their collective strength and spiritual base will see them through this difficult time. My prayers and love are with them always.

Kay was a remarkable human being, well beyond the ordinary, even well beyond the extraordinary.

As a 1965 graduate of Allen Jay HS in High Point NC, I had the honor of being one of her first students. She was our senior English teacher and basketball coach. She was an inspiration then and as I followed her career, she meant even more to me. What a lady, if we only had more like her.

Coach Kay Yow touched lives she does not even know. I was blessed to have crossed paths as few times as I have due to the impact she could make on your life in an instant. She has an impact on my life. She was one of those people in life that you may not have known at the time the impact they have later in your life, but somehow cross paths again later and it makes more sense. Do you know what I mean?

Coach Yow had such an influence on my life, first at Allen Jay High School and then when old enough, as the camp director in which I attended as a student athlete. Kay exemplified the model for what we want in high school and the college coaches. She was a pioneer and role model in a man’s world for young girls and a later became the inspiring factor to cultivate the belief that women could prevail with faith and perseverance.

As a first year basketball student athlete, I carried a tape recorder to the Kay Yow basketball camps at NC State so I could tape her motivational speeches. I remember feeling so inspired and overwhelmed by her speeches, that I wanted to hear them every day. They actually increased my heart rate as I would sit and listen to her and felt as a young girl, feeling that I could do anything I set my mind to. I simply could not remember everything at once and needed to hear it over and over!! I played those cassette tapes all the time in my room to drive it into my being, so I could be the best I could be. I did this throughout my high school basketball career and now cherish those words even today. Recently, Allen Jay sold their 50-year annual, which has a special focus on a first year coach Kay Yow (she looks so funny with her beehive hair - and I mean this in a very loving way!) I love that I am in the same annual with her, even though I was not old enough to be on her team yet. Yet as mentioned in the first paragraph, sometimes we do not know these subtle “occurrences” for such a good spirit to be in your life.

In 2007, I was humbly awarded the Triad YWCA Woman of the Year in Exercise and Sport Science category and Kay Yow was the first to win this award in the same Exercise Science category. She was also the co-chair of the committee that year; therefore, she is on my DVD sharing the same motivational speech as she has always and I will cherish this always. Subtle occurrences.

Her eternal belief in determination, drive, and courage persevere in my life today just as strong today as they were then. I can feel an increased heart rate just thinking about the power of determination that radiated from those in her presence. This kind of power comes from motivation and belief that cannot be imagined or created, but that which is lived.

While I did not walk in the same path as Kay and gave up coaching for State Government service, I can feel her presence in the person that I am today. Kay helped me to unlock my mind and never give up. I remember her saying that a winner was not the one with the most points at the end of the game, but the one who acquired the most out of it. I remember my first losing season as a basketball coach as one of the hardest times of my life. We had moved into a conference twice our size with lots of talent and I had a handful of freshmen, one senior and one sophomore. That year, I knew we were “under construction”. I had to find a way to keep these girls determined night after night of losing. I went to listen to my tapes. Then it hit me, we would develop a plan for the next several years and we would find a way to win even without having the most points and our team shirts were “under construction”. We had awards for the small things (reaching a goal for a certain number of rebounds, assists, accurate play execution, and positive comments to others. I provided awards for disguised challenges until they could master the skill, just like I learned in camp. This, overall, emerged for me to pay it forward to these girls, was taught to me by Kay Yow. We improved and we believed no matter what and while we may not have had the most points at the end of the night, we won when we accomplished our goals.

I work still today on the motto “where there is a will there is a way” or moreover, “where there is a will there is a spirit of Kay”. While some may not understand my method or madness to how and why I do what I do and how I get things done, Kay was an inspiration to me and helped shape me into the determined person I am today. I will never forget what she has meant to girls in sport and the inspiring message to never quit.

My heart hurts yet sings, Kay will be missed, but her life lessons are embedded forever. It is our responsibility now to continue that total strength of mind and belief to others.

I remember when Kay played girl's basketball at Gibsonville HS (six on six) with her two sisters. I attended Nathaniel Greene School (a union school like Gibsonville) and we had the Arrington triplets. The first time I met Kay was when I lead team devotions and she rembembered the Arrington Triplets. In another "its a small world", I did my student teaching at Allen Jay when Kay was there. She truly lived out her deep faith in the love and faithfulness of God in Christ.

In the 1980s, I met Coach Yow while I worked at UNC-TV. She asked my assistance in arranging to broadcast the women's ACC Basketball Tournament on public TV. We did so for a few years, and then -- at last -- commercial broadcasters began to understand the appeal of women's sports. Some years later, my daughter attended her beginning basketball camp and, thanks to a charity auction, shared a private luncheon with Coach Yow. As she gave the tour of the women's locker room, Coach Yow told my daughter and another young friend, "You are responsible for making yourself better. You have to work at it, every day, and then you'll get where you want to be." Around the same time, my husband and I took our daughter to an early-round NCAA women's tournament game in which NC State whupped up on Maine. The UNC and Duke women were also playing that weekend, and I think they were all at home. As we walked into Reynolds with the band playing, the cheerleaders shouting and the pom-poms waving, I stopped to chat with TV friends of mine free-lancing for ESPN. All of a sudden, I choked up with the realization that ESPN was at Coach Yow's game and would be at two other women's games in the Triangle within 24 hours, and that the brave woman in there -- already a breast cancer survivor -- had done so much to make it happen. My daughter noticed the tears. I tried to explain to her the enormous change, and she said, "What change? Hasn't it always been like this?" Thanks to Kay Yow and other women like her, generations of young women now EXPECT to have the chance to compete, to wave at the camera operators and to hear the pep band play for them. I'm glad that they don't know any other world, and I want them to know about the great ladies who helped make it so.

In 1967 I had the honor of being coached by Kay at Allen Jay High School in High Point, NC. I made her varsity team during my sopomore year. I wasn't very good. I was really surprised! During a game with one of our biggest rivals, Ragsdale High School, the game was tied. Most of our good players had fouled out. She pointed at me and motioned me in. I thought my heart would stop. I was a great bench warmer! As the game continued, I took a "wild shot" at the hoop and much to everyone's amazement, I made it. It didn't look like it was anywhere near the hoop from where I was standing. I looked at Kay. Her mouth was wide open and her face was frozen. That shot was definately made by devine intervention! I looked at her again, so proud of myself. She had the biggest grin on her face. I know that in her heart she knew she had given me my "15 minutes of fame". I am proud to have been on her team during her first coaching position. She is still a legend among those at Allen Jay that knew her.

God motioned her in. It's her turn to play. God bless her.

I am a devoted Tarheel fan who has a lot of respect and admiration for Coach Yow and Coach Jim V. The love and compassion that they demonstrated before the Wolfpack players and fans is unmeasurable. she was truly an inspiration to all women. She never gave up and taught us all a very valuable lesson in life. To her family, you were so blessed to have such a remarkable woman in your family. Thank you for sharing her with NCSU and the world. May God grant you strength, peace and comfort as you face these difficult days ahead.

As a long time fan of Women's basketball, I have admired Coach Yow since I first heard of her. I am a huge fan of the Univ of TN and have followed Pat Head Summit's career since she was in college..
NC State was always right up there and when Coach Yow led the US Women's Olympic team to Gold, she became my 2nd most admired Coach in the Country-Men or Women's!!
I am very saddened to learn of Coach Yow's passing, I know that she is leaving a big hole in the heart's of many. May those holes be filled with the memory of this lovely lady... She was one of the few people who get a lot of media attention whom I admire greatly.
God Speed to your soul Coach and may those you left behing be inspired by your well lived life, to aspire to greatness.

There are not many people on this planet like Coach Yow. She was and will remain an angel sent from heaven to inspire thousands. Her character was flawless and as a young girl her strength inspired me to never give up. My heart was truly broken when I read the news that she passed but I truly believe she is in God's hands. We can all learn from the life she lived and are all better people from having known her.

My deepest sypathy to all of the Yow family. Kay meant so much to Women's Basketball, helping to bring it to the forefront and make it a popular spectator sport. But her greatest contribution to the human race was the courage she inspired in so many as she battled cancer. As I battle colorectal cancer now Kay and her memory are such inspirations to me.

I'm truly sorry for your loss and may it help your family to know Kay was thought so highly of and respected by so many. The people and especially young people she touched and influenced alone is such an accomplishment, but to give so much to her beloved NCSU is huge too. She is in a far better place but will be missed here by so many. I know God blessed her with many good years and now she is in heaven where everything is glorious forever.

What an inspirational person. Coach Yow fought hard and strong and she has completed her course. She is coaching now on her Savior's team and enjoying every minute of it! To those she left behind, may you be comforted by the many memories that you have of her.

Coach Yow represented N. C. State University with dignity, grace, and emotion. Her attitudes influenced many who played for her as well as those like myself who watched her teams play. I didn't personally know her, but feel as if I have lost a true friend. May God take her in his arms and continue to bless her.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
