L.B. Jones was appointed to Young Harris Church in Athens Georgia in 1929 and stayed for much longer than normal. I was 2 and he was 3. In the era of evening services, Beve and I played while younger children slept in the parsonage and the congregation next door sang Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown. The church was wide but only six rows deep, with a center and two side aisles. At the eleven o'clock service, Beve would sit in the front row on one side of the center aisle and I would sit in the front row on the other side. One Sunday we would eat at the parsonage and the next we would eat at our house. On the Sundays we ate at the parsonage, he would get a switching for talking. On the Sundays we ate at my houseyes, I would get the switching.

When they moved to Grant Park, we coasted in the street on homemade racers and played in Grant Park at night. Next they moved to Hapeville. Beve was an outstanding ping pong player, softball player, and cross country runner. I think it was his idea a few years later for us to ride bikes to Savannah and back when we only had five days before we had to be back for a youth meeting.

Next L.B. went to Inman Park and Beve began to develop into one of the best after dinner speakers in the country. He did not just tell jokes, then a lesson, but knit everything together into a meaningful message. He was absolutely superb at that. In college he would type out a term paper the night before, turn in his first draft, and only once was it not an A. They assigned him to start a new church right out of seminary and its success was phenomenal.

After a lifetime of friendship, it was a privilege to live within walking distance of him and to visit often in his declining years.
