Michael Collins Obituary
Michael Allen "Mac" Collins served on the Butts County Commission before his election to the Georgia State Senate, where he served four years in District 17. He was elected to Congress in 1992, serving for 12 years. He ran for U.S. Senate in 2004, losing in the primary.
The governor's office has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff Nov. 23-25, 2018 at the State Capitol and in Butts County.
His funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 at Rock Springs Church, 219 Rock Springs Road, Milner, Ga. Visitation will be the two hours before the service at the church. Haisten Funeral Home in Jackson, Ga. is handling arrangements.
Collins is survived by his wife Julie, four adult children, grandchildren and a namesake great-grandchild, Denver Mac Collins.

Rod and I offer our condolences. We lost touch after we moved to Texas but often wished we had Mac as our Representative and friend. We still like to tell the story of how after dinner at our house in Jonesboro, Mac asked our oldest son what Bill Clinton was going to do to his piggy bank. He answered, "tax it!". Wanda told us, Mac used that in his campaign speeches.

Mac was a very fine gentleman. I was privileged to know him at Piedmont Academy and had the honor to introduce him when he gave the commencement address. I still have a copy of his speech. (Not positive of the year.)
Julie and children, we are praying for you and will continue to do so. The children were special students at Piedmont and you did a lot of things to make your parents proud. Always remember the principles they taught you.

Sending love to the Collins family. We respected & loved Mac (& Julie!), my first employer in federal government after I married & moved to Georgia in 1998. Our family has always been grateful for his excellent service to our state and our country. We were very sad to read of his passing. Oh for a Congress full of Mac Collinses! We need more men like Mac in this troubled world that we live in. He was always a good honest self-made man because he knew what it was like to start from digging ditches for a living.
