Stephanie GWINN Obituary

GWINN, Stephanie Autrey Stephanie Autrey Gwinn, age 46, died in the early morning of Tuesday, April 26th at Hospice Atlanta. There will be a gather-ing of family, friends, colleagues and students May 12, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Solarium at Historic Scottish Rite, 321 W. Hill St. Decatur, Ga. 30030. Stephanie was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Mitchell Gwinn and Christina Connell Gwinn on November 1, 1969. She grew up in Decatur, and attended Clairemont Elementary, Renfroe Middle, and Decatur High School. In 1991, Stephanie graduated from Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York with a degree in Art History. She lived in New York City for five years before returning to Atlanta in 1996. Soon after, Stephanie found her calling as an elementary school teacher. She obtained a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University, studied to become a Teacher-Librarian and received an Endorsement in English as a Second Language. She was an extraordinary teacher who instilled a sense of wonder in the classroom, opening minds, providing experiences, dancing, singing and helping others. She had a gift for teaching children to read and shared her love of books with her students. She cherished the beauty of nature which became part of her classroom culture as she planted trees, gardens and emphasized the importance of conservation and recycling. She was awarded Teacher of the Year at Parkside Elementary School in 2009. In 2012 Stephanie moved to San Francisco where she taught 4th grade at Rosa Parks Elementary School. In the summer, as a volunteer, Stephanie taught English at the Ecole Publique de St. Briac-sur-Mer, France. An adventuresome spirit, Stephanie loved to travel. She loved her family and friends, her colleagues and students. Pre-deceased by her mother, Christina Connell Gwinn, Stephanie is survived by Clay and Barrie Harper; her father and step mother, Mitchell and Kathy Gwinn; her brothers, Matthew Gwinn and Michael Reagan; her sisters, Laura and Anna Jensen, Ansley and Kaley Gwinn; Susan and Cleland Child, Kevin Connell, and her Grandmother, Jacquelyn Gwinn. She is further survived by her niece, other relatives and many friends. In lieu of cutting and sending flowers, Stephanie wishes people to honor her by helping plant trees, by donating to Trees Atlanta or another environmental charity such as Sierra Club/Atlanta Inspiring Connections Outdoors (formerly known as Inner City Outings), an organization near to her heart.

I just learned of Stephanie's passing 2 days ago. She was a dear neighbor of ours in Atlanta. Refined, thoughtful and compassionate, she was a truly wonderful human being. The world is just a little duller without her. Our family sends peace, love and joy throughout the community just as she would have wanted. Thank you for being part of our lives, Stephanie.

I didn't know of Stephanie's passing. I am saddened deeply that I did not have another opportunity to thank her for all that she did for me. She was always kind and warm and giving. After the loss of my daughters in a car accident, she hugged me and comforted me. I was able to tell her how a song she shared with the students comforted me in my loss. She was used by the Lord to share love and peace. Even in my pain, I remembered her gentle spirit. May she be adorned and rewarded in heaven for the good she did while on her earthly journey. Peace for all of eternity, my sister. You've earned it. God bless and keep the family.

I knew Stephanie early in her life. We attended the same schools all the way through high school. Stephanie was truly a sweet-natured person. That term is often used in a clichéd way. But with Stephanie, the term is just absolutely fitting. It was apparent in the way she related to people, the way she spoke to them, in her facial expressions. I have no doubt that everyone who new her feels this way. I didn't know that she became a teacher but it strikes me as perfect. To her family and friends, I'm so sorry for your loss. She smiled and laughed easily and I hope that the memory of that laugh and that smile comes to you often.

Ms. Gwinn...you will truly be missed. I remember those Parkside days...you truly were a blessing not only to my children...but to the many children's lives that you touched. Thanks for all you did. May your family find peace during this very difficult time. May they find comfort, knowing that you truly were a blessing. Rest in Peace Miss Gwinn.

I admired Stephanie strived to be a librarian like her. She was someone who would usher teachers and students into the library even when they would forget to come, someone who recycled and was always on the news for her beautiful earth day projects with her students, someone who provided games and a safe haven for kids before and after school and long before people talked about putting games in the library, someone who worked tirelessly to make a nice collection for the students and created nice picture labels for the shelves so the kids could find what they are looking for is gone at 46!! I am heartbroken. After meeting many librarians while I was in my library practicum I felt her practices were the best to try and emulate. She was heralded as the best librarian Atlanta Public Schools had- The world has suffered a big loss!!!!!! I am sorry Stephanie, I tried to keep track of you but you moved away and then I could not find you...I always think about you. You have touched many hearts directly and you live on through me and the others you have touched. I am so honored to have known you. Thank you for spending time with me and trusting me with your library when you went out on foot surgery. You were one of the kindest, gentlest, and most beautiful soul I have ever known.
