Thelma Grundy, longtime proprietor of Thelma's Kitchen in downtown Atlanta, ran her restaurants with a family and egalitarian spirit from 1968 to 2014.

Her remarkable career spanned six locations, as she packed up, moved and started over every time "progress" and gentrification nipped at her heels. Grundy was considered the queen of Atlanta soul food. Thelma's Kitchen was a meat-and-three with few peers and a fiercely loyal clientele.

Thelma Grundy, 93, died April 18, 2020 from a head injury after a fall at home. She was buried at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.

She was born Thelma Smith May 21, 1926, one of 10 children whose parents owned considerable farmland outside of Buena Vista, Ga.

To the Grundy Family:

Sending our deepest condolences to the wonderful queen of hospitality, culinary and love. She's been a source of strength, encouragement and joy to my entire family. Mama Grundy shared her love us in such an extraordinary way almost 25 years ago when she catered our rehearsal dinner and wedding reception. Her spirit of elegance and culinary sophistication made these events something special to remember.

May God bless and strengthen the family in the days and years ahead. You are forever blessed because of Mama Grundy, also known as a "fervent praying woman"

Love and prayers,
Elder & Mrs. Dennis Parks and family

My name is Pat. I never met Thelma and never had a chance to dine at any of her restaurants. I'm in S. Jersey and never made it to Georgia. I did however read about her when I was researching food places in other states. I have told myself if I ever get to Georgia , I'm going to her place and say hello. I could tell from what I read that she IS a cool person. To the entire family and many friends I am truly sorry for ur loss and for the loss of her husband a few yrs back. R I P Thelma.

Sister Grundy you hold a very special place in my heart. I often told you that you were a unique sharp dresser and the hats you wore I often complimented and stated to you to let me model that hat and you would always smile. I also remember that you cater dinner at the church and that dinner was dynamite. I will miss you . You fought a good fight. RIP.

So sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed eating at the restaurants. I still have cravings for her Peach and Strawberry Cobbler that she always served on Thursday's. I often tell my friends about walking to the restaurant just for the cobbler.

Family, my condolences to all. Sis. Grundy was such a fun, vibrant and loving soul. Though many years span between our last meeting, I can still see that big beautiful warm smile and hear her hearty laugh! Who could NOT smile in her presence? From my childhood to adulthood, she was always the same.
May your loving memories and her well lived and fulfilled life comfort you always.
We lost an earthly angel. Heaven gained a true and rare gem.

Lovingly yours,
