Albert Catarino

Anthem - Albert Catarino, age 78, of Anthem, AZ passed away peacefully on January 9, 2021. With his son, daughter and close family friend by his side he left this world freed from the fatiguing battle he fought for the past 3 weeks. Al was born in Plainfield, NJ to parents, Ann and Albert Catarino, but lived in Scranton, PA until the age of 8 when the family moved back to NJ. Along with siblings, Michael, Roger and Barbara, Al grew up in South Plainfield, NJ where he fostered an early love and talent for playing music. After graduating from South Plainfield High School in 1960, Al joined the US Air Force which awarded him the opportunity to travel west for the first time. After serving in the Air Force he settled back in South Plainfield and met wife Roseanne Shanni of Westfield, NJ and married in 1971. Al and Roseanne lived in Piscataway and South Plainfield, NJ with their 3 children, Alan, Amy and Jill. Playing music most every weekend Al worked for AT&T and Lucent Technologies most of his adult life before retiring in 1999 and settling in the Phoenix area the same year. Al has always loved playing guitar and singing. He was very prominent in the local music scene where he made and cherished lasting friendships with fellow musicians. Other than playing, talking and living music, his great joys came from spending time with his 2 grandsons, Braden (20) and Connor (19) Ward of Brielle, NJ and Abigail Cummings (6) of Phoenix, AZ. Music minded, Veteran, baseball enthusiast, doting husband, proud parent and adoring grandfather, Albert Catarino has brought great joy and inspiration to all. He will be undeniably missed. With limited capacity, funeral services will be held Sunday, January 17th at 10am at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary 8555 E Pinnacle Peak Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85255.

Jill and Alan,
I am so sorry about Al. What a great guy he was. I so enjoyed the friendship we had.
You both have endured so much the last 8 years and it does not seem fair.
I will miss Al and will always cherish the memories that were made working and performing. When Al asked me to play some gigs with him, I had no idea how much fun I was about to have. I will never forget him.
Sheryl and I will be praying for your family.
If you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, Von Wagner

I live in Anthem, and played music with Al at local venues around the valley. I always enjoyed his prowess on the guitar, and we added great two-part harmonies to our songs. May he rest in peace.

Sending our condolences on the passing of Al. Other than knowing Al as the brother-in-law of my cousin Janet, Al came into our lives as we coached our daughters' softball teams. We had alot of fun, especially working with dynamite teams and the end of season pool parties at the Catarino house were especially memorable. Always a gracious host, Al made sure everyone always felt "right at home". May all the good memories carry your family through this difficult period of mourning. Some day Al will be making us feel "right at home" in heaven.

So very saddened to loose Al Catarino. We first met on a small U.S. Air Force radar station west of Winslow, AZ, back in 1963. Both coming from northeast States we became fast friends and spent much of our spare time together. After discharge from the Air Force we went our separate ways but stayed in touch and remained good friends all of our lives.

I have so many great and special memories of Al starting with him playing guitar and singing fun songs about the cast of crazy characters who served along with us at the radar station. In later years our family's would socialize together as we had the opportunity. I remember watching Al sing and play at so many locations and places that I lost count long ago.

Extra special times that I remember Al singing and playing was next to the house swimming pool at the celebration of his daughter, Jill, graduating from Arizona State University. Jill who looked absolutely beautiful was playing guitar with Al and it was a very sweet and special occasion to watch them play together. Al also wonderfully entertained all family and friends at my surprise 70th birthday party, I'll never forget, what fun.

Thus it is with a very heavy heart that I say bye for now to my special friend, Al, or "The Cat," as we sometimes called him in the Air Force. When my time comes I sure hope to see him again in heaven above. For now I say thank you my good friend for all the fun times together and entertainment you provided me for all those years. Rest peacefully Al and may God bless you in heaven.

To Alan, Jill and Amy,
I was so saddened to hear of your dad's passing. I have such great memories of being at your house while Mr. Mosca was finishing off your basement, your dad would sing for Mr. Mosca, and he LOVED it! And we had fun in the pool with both your mom and dad. They will forever be in my thoughts and I will always have nice memories of all of us together.
