Today, I was genuinely saddened to find out about the passing of Lou Pena. I lived across the street from the Penas many years ago. I have tender memories of Lou. He was such a sweet, kind-hearted man, and I still felt like I could see his soul simply by looking at his eyes. I will miss him.
Norma, Matt, and Mark, I am so sad for your profound loss. My heart is heavy with you all.

My sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Louis Pena. I was very fortunate, as a freshman at Carl Hayden High in the mid-1960s, to have had him as my Science teacher and then to have acted as his student assistant in my junior year. Mr. Pena was a committed and knowledgeable teacher and he somehow managed to make even beginning science seem interesting to a bunch of silly freshmen! I remember him as being strict, but fair, and he would go out of his way to offer his help when he saw that someone was struggling with the classwork. I understood later that Mr. Pena sincerely wanted for all of his students to do well in school, and in life as well. As a student assistant, I got to see firsthand how much he cared about his students, and how he tried to get through to even the most reluctant of them, myself included. He took a chance on me and let me work as a student assistant, in spite of the fact that I didn't have the best track record of attending class regularly. In fact, he once caught myself and another girl climbing over a fence in order to ditch school, and he stood there, without saying a word, until we both sheepishly climbed back over and hurried off to class where we belonged!
As I mentioned, Mr. Pena really cared about all of his students and kept tabs on us throughout our high school years, in order to check on our progress and probably to make sure we were behaving as well as we should! He really knew his students and even years later, if you saw him out in public somewhere, he would remember your name and would take the time to talk with you, which was remarkable, considering how many of us passed through his classes during his long tenure as an educator. I guess he was still keeping tabs on his former students, even after many, many years had passed...
I personally will always remember his kindness and feel so privileged to have known him. If more teachers shared his high level of excellence, commitment and understanding, this world would be a much better place!
I hope his family will be comforted by the fact that so many former students and co-workers still hold him in such high regard and remember him so fondly. May God bless you all, now and in the days to come. J. Forrey

Our condolences to your family. May God provide you the strength to get thru the difficult times. He was a wonderful man as I knew him. He always had a smile and his laughter brighten up the room. He will be missed. Rest in peace Mr. Pena.
