The Pipho Family stood firmly on five legs' when I first met them in August of 1969. A kind, generous, grateful, loving and courageous family. As a young exchange student from Denmark landing in the northeast corner of Iowa's farm country I did not know Helen and Merle who picked me up at the Cedar Rapids Airport. They were a wonderful host family and I felt adopted' from the first day. Little did I know that they would become my American parents' for life and play a greater part in my journey than they would ever know.
I also got two older brothers and a younger sister - Gerry, Ron and Sandy. Gerry gave me an appreciation for music like Chicago, Joe Cocker, Jimmy Hendrix and others. We ended up having many great conversations some about Soren Kierkegaard which were deeper than I could handle at the time. We had many laughs which continue to this day. Ron became my best friend and I am so happy he came to stay with us in Denmark for a while. Together, we were very adventurous'. We always had fun and shared many, many belly-laughs. It was one of the saddest days when I received the sad news that he prematurely left us all. Sandy, was sweet, accepting and perhaps a little quiet, but she made up for it with her repertoire of music morning and night! To this day I think of her whenever I hear The Archies play Sugar, Sugar'. Sandy, the thoughts are fond and with a smile.
Over the years, we kept in touch which led to several visits in Tempe, Sonoma and Copenhagen. While much time would sometimes pass between visits, we made up for it with phone calls around birthdays and Christmas or just because.
I learned more about being authentic and the true values of this family's strong ethics. I believe that values and virtues were intentionally nurtured and taught daily and I believe Helen and Merle saw it as their personal mission to make us decent, grateful and compassionate human beings. I have much to thank Helen and Merle for and particularly the deeper meaning of their best virtues. I am satisfied that I have shared my gratitude with them over the years.
Merle was a gentle, warm and caring man. He was a great dad' to me during the Denver Days and he became an adult friend, albeit at a distance, as he matured, and I grew up, well, so to speak. Like many others, I will miss him deeply. Thank you, Merle, it was an honor to know you and spend some time in your easy-going presence. You are in a good place now, with Ron. Please give him a big hug from me and ask him to do the same from me to you.
Helen, Gerry and Sandy. My heart and thoughts are with you.

Celebrating a life truly well-lived. It was a privilege to have known Merle...blessings and comfort to Helen and the rest of the family.

We will always remember Merle as the most loving, giving human being. Never met anyone we admired more. The Lord is calling home a gem. He will be sorely missed.

May the God of all comfort strengthen the family during this time of deep sorrow. Those who pass on, God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. My sincerest condolences. (Psalms 116:15)
