Charles "Buz" Chaney died peacefully at home on May 15, 2018 at the age of 74 in Pacific Grove, CA. Buz is survived by his sister Pat Savage of Catonsville, Maryland, his 2 children Tracy Iseler of Washington, D.C. and David Chaney of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, his wife Donna Gates of Pacific Grove, CA and his two grandchildren Max and Elizabeth Iseler as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. Buz was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 15, 1944 and at an early age realized his passion for competition. He was inducted into the Mt. St. Joe's Hall of Fame in 1991 having excelled in baseball and basketball. He went on to play Division 1 basketball for Boston College under the tutelage of Bob Cousy. After graduating with a degree in Mathematics, from Boston College, Buz entered the Peace Corps serving in Costa Rica where he learned Spanish and established physical education and health programs in the local schools. Upon his return home to Baltimore, he started his career with McCormick Spice and began programing computers. It was the start of a long and productive career in Information Technology where he worked more than 30 years while competing on the corporate basketball team. Buz's passion for the game continued well into the latter stages of his life. As he matured he transitioned to tennis and proceeded to lead a team representing Northern CA to the 2014 USTA National Championships. Buz outlasted teams more than half his age deftly placing shots while using his amazing charm to soften the defeat. At Buz's memorial ceremony in CA, countless members of both his tennis club and pickleball club spoke of Buz's passion as a charming competitor. Like every other competition, Buz fought a long hard match against Cancer and will be deeply missed by family, friends and competitors alike. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 30 Melvin Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228 at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 28th. In lieu of flowers we ask that you provide donations to: The Cornelius Francis Scully and Family Memorial Scholarship Endowment, Mt. St. Joseph High School, 4403 Frederick Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229.
