A bit of a long story but I met Mr. Manfuso at Suffolk Downs in around 1989 or so. The Racing Commission Office was located in the back right hand corner of the grandstand. On a Sunday we had a steeplechase race as race 1 with National fences. They were not too high and the Chair and Beechers Brook on the English Grand National were safe. You could literally run through the plastic bushes. Anyway I saw the name on the owners license application. I said Mr. Manfuso, he said No No Bob, you and your brother are the only two who did a number on Frank DeFrancis who had a hairstyle exactly the same as the President but in gray. I had read that if Defrancis had not done something by a certain date, which he didnt the price for Pimlico and Laurel were going up a good chunk of money!! Now he liked me. His horse was running. I noted in his previous start he had been beaten by 50 at over 100-1. In a true introduction to steeplechasing Bob said, Hell win!! Well he did but the word was out. He paid about $2.80. I couldnt bet him at that price and the previous race anyway. Now about the 5th race Bob made the long walk over from the dining room to my office and asked me, Do you talked Churchill here?? Simulcasting was in its infancy. Not all the tracks were available but Suffolk took CD. I said yeah! Bob said, Race 7, Nafzer is running a horse. I know it will run good. I went and put $20 on the nose! It wins easily... paid 7/8-1!! Bob came back to the office. Did you have it?? I said yeah, showed him the ticket, and said the wife and I are having Chinese food tonight on you!! He was laughing!! He pounded the counter!!! im Sure he had it through a bookie for $500 whatever but he was genuinely happy for me. That was my only memory of Mr. Manfuso but it is a true one. It is not mentioned in the obituary!!! HAR HAR!! What a great guy even too a nobody like me. RIP!!!
