Sammy (Sam) Barnes, 77, of Alexander, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, at his home.
Sam was born June 23, 1940, in Moorefield, to Gerald and Ruth Barnes. He graduated from Little Rock Tech in 1958. On March 4, 1961, he married the former Jean Hester. Sam was a former Benton police officer and fleet manager for Bale Chevrolet. He enjoyed working and never met a stranger. He spent countless hours in his workshop where he made numerous valuable pieces for his family to treasure. He also enjoyed fishing, coin collecting and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Ruth Barnes.
Sam is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean (Hester) Barnes; a son, Jerry Barnes, of Alexander; a daughter Karen (Barnes) Smith and son-in-law, Joel, of Brant; three grandchildren, Sara Coker, of Fayetteville, Brandon Smith and wife, Cassie, of Portland, Oregon, and Sydney Smith, of Denver; and a brother- and sister-in-law, Edwin and Linda Hester.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at Ashby Funeral Home, located at 108 W. Narroway St. in Benton.
The Rev. Kim Hammer will be officiating.
Burial will follow at Forrest Hills Cemetery, located at 10200 Arkansas 5, in Alexander.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at the funeral home.
