Charles Steven Crotwell, "Steve" of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Friday, February 26th, 2021, at the age of 57. Steve was profoundly dedicated to his family and cherished his roles as husband, father, brother, and son beyond all others. He was born in Midfield, Alabama on April 4th, 1963 to Charles Crotwell and Evelyn Bell Crotwell. He grew up with his sister, Pam Crotwell Phifer, and was known for being loud, protective and kind from a young age. Steve grew up being an avid athlete and went on to play college football at Livingston University. Steve maintained his athleticism throughout his life and developed strong passions for running and biking. He completed more than one marathon including the Mercedes-Benz Marathon and the Marine Corps Half-Marathon in Washington D.C. Steve loved his pets and dedicated hours each day to taking his dogs on long walks. As a young man, Steve worked as a monitor tech to put himself through Jefferson State Nursing School. Steve met Valerie Keeling Crotwell of Hokes Bluff, Alabama while working at Carraway Hospital and they were married in 1984. Steve developed many life-long friendships and was a natural storyteller. He would often light up a room with his tales. Steve and Valerie had two children, Tara and Kyle Crotwell, and moved to Clay, Alabama to raise them. He was above all things proud and supportive of his children at every step and he shared that with absolutely everyone he met. Steve spent his career as an RN at UAB hospital for almost 30 years. He was profoundly respected by everyone he interacted with and had a reputation throughout the entire hospital for being able to place an IV in even the most difficult of veins. He was obsessed with Alabama football and wore a suit and tie for every national championship game. He loved fishing and was at his happiest on the water. He loved loud 90's grunge music and pure rock and roll. He was independent, driven and sought to better himself and those around him always. He loved to laugh and spend time with those he loved. He is survived by his parents, wife, children, son-in-law, sister, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was taken from everyone far too soon and his love and life will never be forgotten by those close to him. There will be a Celebration of Life gathering to honor Steve and to pay respects to the family Sunday, March 7th, 2021, outside at the Veterans Park Barn Pavilion at 4800 Valleydale Road in Hoover, Alabama from 2-4 p.m. The family asks you to wear your best Alabama football gear and to please wear a mask, because it is what Steve would have wanted.
