Lots of love and prayers for the Booker family. Saying Jesse was important to me as a teenager and young adult is an understatement. He was a great teacher and principal during my 3 years at RLC, but he was an even better friend, a mentor, advisor, a dad while my father was commuting to Atlanta every week for 2 years, a great example for all of his children at school, and a humble servant to all of us. His self-deprecating humor, humble spirit and selflessness helped us special kids to laugh at ourselves and made us comfortable to be ourselves in public. Partly because he walked that path before us, but mostly because he cared for all of us as a group and as individuals. Going on trips to restaurants, flea markets, Mt. Cheaha, Randolph County, Tannehill and Springville. Providing me a place to stay for 3 summers so I could intern during college. Hosting my family for Thanksgiving. Always helping out however he was able. Loved my wife and kids like they were his daughter-in-law and grandchildren. I have so many wonderful memories from having Jesse in my life, and will share them with anyone who asks. Thank you to a good and faithful servant who will be missed.

Jesse Booker was one of my favorite teachers at RLC. He was generous with his time and his knowledge, introducing me to great literature, such as work by Dorothy Parker and Flannery O'Connor. He was incredibly funny and unafraid to laugh at himself. I believe that I've never looked at majorettes in the same way after his hilarious baton-twirling routine during a school Christmas pageant. Jesse was also extremely kind. Whenever I went back to visit the school, even long after I graduated, he always made me feel as though I was welcomed home. I thought of him often in recent years, hoping that as I teach, I pay forward some of the good that he gave to me. Rest in peace, Jesse, and thanks for everything.

Jesse was my lifelong friend. I have loved him for my entire life. He was the brother I never had, my model of how to love others without judgment. A brilliant mind and a genius of friendship. He personified grace. He loved his students most of all. God speed my brilliant, beloved friend who could always make me life. See you on the other side... as planned.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr Booker was wonderful and a great teacher and principal. I am better having known him.
