BASHINSKY, THOMAS MAJOR Thomas Major Bashinsky, age 63, of Mountain Brook, devoted husband and loving father, died Monday, March 15, 2010. Major was born and reared in Mountain Brook, Alabama. He graduated from The University of Alabama with a degree in Business and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order/Fraternity. He served in the Alabama International Guard. Major owned a restaurant in Tampa, Florida before returning to Birmingham to attend Cumberland Law School where he was on Law Review. He graduated in 1978. He received his LLM in tax law from the University of Florida in 1979. Major worked in Mobile for the law firm of Armbrecht, Jackson, Demouy, Crowe, Holmes & Reeves, LLC. Within a couple of years he opened his own law practice specializing in estate planning in Fairhope, Alabama. Major returned to Birmingham in 1987 and was involved in several franchise businesses including Voice-Tel, Huntington Learning Center and Air Borne Express. He was currently practicing Elder Law and was a certified financial planner. Major's interests included flying (he was an instrumented rated pilot), sailing, golf, snow skiing and photography. He was also an avid reader. Major was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club of Birmingham, the Monday Morning Quarterback Club and the Country Club of Birmingham. Major is survived by his wife of 15 years, Leslie Hewett Bashinsky and their two children, Holt Young Bashinsky and Nelle Kylie Bashinsky. He is also survived by two older children, Sloan Elizabeth Bashinsky and Brooks Major Bashinsky (Gayle Bashinsky Palmer); his sister Elisabeth Burford Bashinsky, his brother Sloan Young Bashinsky, Jr., his stepsister, Suzanne Bashinsky Ash; his stepmother Joann Bashinsky; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Sloan Young Bashinsky, and his mother, Nelle Major Bashinsky. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Canterbury United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to one the following organizations: Children's Harbor, Inc, 1 Our Children's Highway, Children's Harbor, AL 35010-8620; Grace House Ministries, Post Office Box 547, Fairfield, AL 35064; Greater Birmingham Humane Society, 300 Snow Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (879-3401) in Homewood.

I am sorry for your loss. I read about the death in the Internet. I only knew of him because his father and my father, Thomas Sloan Young were related. May he rest in peace.

Leslie....I don't know if you remember me but we graduated together from Berry. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband Major.
