Sy - You were the greatest theory teacher I ever had for sure. That sparkle in your eye and those scribbled note on my papers 40 years ago. I especially liked your comments on my paper on Peter Berger's work. You gave me the courage to share it with him. He was very gracious in reviewing my critique. May you rest in peace and continue to be involved in the millions of intellectual discussions carried out by your many students.

I remember when he taught thecourse Race in America in Amsterdam 20 years ago At that time I started really thinking about our "Zwarte Piet" blackface character in The Netherlands. Which is changing now. Sad to see he passed away.

We must not forget that Sy co-edited with me an award winning book, Strangers at Home: Vietnam Veterans Since the War in 1980. He was a great scholar but an even better social instigator for peace and understanding. God Bless you Sy.

Dear Paula--Sy was a wonderful teacher and member of my dissertation committee. I enjoyed him very much and learned from him when he was on my dissertation committee. I was a graduate student at Boston College in the late 1970sand early 1980s. Sy added a great deal to my education. I was one of the few graduate students from Minnesota and enjoyed speaking with him about his experiences in Minneapolis and St. Paul. , Mike Rustad, Thomas F. Lambert J r. Professor of Law Suffolk University Law School, Boston.
