1942 - 2014
Margaret (Mimi) Elizabeth McKean Campbell, 72, of Bozeman passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014, after a battle with small cell lung cancer. She was born Feb. 1, 1942 in Washington, D.C. to George and Elizabeth (Maxey) McKean. Mimi's family were part of the earliest settlers to the Gallatin Valley. In 1881, her great-grandfather, Daniel Maxey, an immigrant from Wales, established a coal mine for the production of domestic fuel for Bozeman. Eventually, a small community grew up around the Maxey mine with a post office named Chimney Rock, but the mining operation declined and eventually ceased around 1950. Daniel Maxey ran a stage with Nelson Story from Bozeman to Livingston and helped fund the construction of the Bozeman Opera House, now the site of Soroptomist Park.
Mimi grew up in Bozeman and graduated from Bozeman High School before attending Montana State College. She also later attended Arizona State University. She married Douglas Campbell of Belle Mead, N.J. in 1961. They were married 13 years and out of that union came three children, Doug, Scott and Lauri. She was also briefly married in 1978 to Robert Kern of Bozeman, with whom she remained good friends.
She previously lived in Chimney Rock, Mont.; Alameda, Calif.; Belle Mead, N.J.; Roswell, N.M.; Lewistown, Mont.; and Chandler, Tempe, and Mesa, Ariz. In addition to being a devoted housewife, Mimi held several self-entrepreneurial jobs, and then found her passion for real estate, working as an agent for over 40 years in both Montana and Arizona. She was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers and was a proud Republican, active in her party. She loved crafting, particularly doll making. She also enjoyed oil painting and playing the piano.
Margaret was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Hannah Maxey McKean on May 9, 1971; father, George William McKean on June 16, 1993; and brother, Richard Phillip McKean on Nov. 20, 2009.
Survivors include her sons, Douglas Bruce Campbell II of Bozeman and Scott Merrick Campbell of Chandler, Ariz.; daughter, Lauri Elizabeth Campbell Loaiza of Belle Mead, N.J.; two daughters-in-law, Barb Goins Campbell and Chantel Rose Campbell; and nine grandchildren whom she adored, Philip Campbell, Amber Jaramillo, Kyle Furfaro, Isabel Loaiza, Tiana Campbell,?Emilia Loaiza, Nicolas Campbell, Daniel Campbell, and Connor Campbell.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 4 at Resurrection University Catholic Parish. A reception will follow at the church.
The family wishes to thank Bozeman Deaconess Hospice for the love and care they showed to Mimi in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Bozeman Deaconess Cancer Center, 931 Highland Blvd, Ste. 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715. A memorial service will be held later this year for the interment of her remains.
Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service, www.dokkennelson.com.

I am lighting this candle in my mind for my dear mother. I have to fly home tomorrow, some 2500 miles away from my mothers cherished items and remains. It's almost more than I can bear. Tonight I am thinking about the love I felt in my mothers arms- and coming to terms with the fact that feeling is gone forever. I miss you so mom.

To the family: I am so sorry for your loss. I went to school with Mimi, in fact she dated one of my older brothers at one time. She was a wonderful classmate and seem to have a wonderful life. I am glad I was able to see her at our 50th class reunion. She will be missed but is in a better place.

Oh,my gosh. I was thnking about Mimi on Tueeday for no real reason other than remembering so many things for our "growing up" days in Bozeman. I was in her brother's class; my sister and I rode with Dick and Mimi to high school. Our families were good friends and we shared many Sunday picnics at their cabin In the country. Although I lost touch with both of them, I have never forgotten either one of the "McKean" kids. The world is a little less bright now without you, Mimi.

Doug, Scott and Lauri: I am so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed the few visits I had with Mimi when we were at Scott and Chantel's. She had a lovely sense of humor and truly loved her family and grandkids. She will be missed by so many but she will be looking down on you all and will continue to guide you. Have comfort in the fact that she is pain free and in gods hands. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
