Clyde Calvin Mayo
Houston, TX
Dr. Clyde Calvin Mayo, 77, died in his home surrounded by his loving family on March 11, 2017 in Houston.
Clyde was born in Robstown, TX to Clyde Culberson and Velma Oxford Mayo on February 2, 1940. He graduated from Sinton High School as valedictorian in 1957. He earned two bachelor's degrees, one from Rice University in 1961 in History, and another from the University of Houston (UH) in 1964 in Psychology. He received a MS in Clinical Psychology from Trinity University in 1966, and a PhD degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from UH in 1972. A licensed PhD Psychologist, he was a principle at LWFW Management Consulting Firm until 1981 when he founded his own business, Management and Personnel Systems. He met Jeanne McCain in Houston and they were married in 1963.
At Rice, Clyde received the E. Merle Smith scholarship award. As a member of the Rice Methodist Student Movement, he was active in the Civil Rights Movement.
He was an active member of the Rice University Alumni Association, and the Westbury United Methodist Church Striver's Sunday school class. He served on the boards of the Foundation for Contemporary Theology and the Houston Area Industrial/Organizational Psychology Association. Clyde mentored students over the years through the Student Counseling Program at Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Rice. He recently authored a book summarizing his career, "Cases and Views of a Practitioner in Industrial/Organizational Psychology".
Clyde is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanne Mayo; his son, Brady Mayo; his daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Jeff Mollhagen; brother, David Mayo; sister and brother-in-law-, Judy Mayo and Sid Aaron; and his six grandchildren, Lane, Justin, Ty, and Landry Mayo; and Aidan and Lydia Mollhagen. Also mourning his loss are his Standard Poodle, Sonny, and Ragdoll cat, Kenny, both of whom seldom left his side.
Clyde also served on the board of the Meyerland Club, and coached Little League Baseball and Softball. He and Jeanne loved to travel and to study the history of countries around the world. They were avid fans of the movies, as well as music, especially the "Blues". Clyde played the guitar and loved to sing. Two of his favorite pastimes were camping and canoeing with his kids and grandkids. He taught them all about the stars and served as an encyclopedia for history, languages, science and math. He enjoyed studying and teaching religion.

Jeanne, so sorry about your husband. He must have been a very special man. My sister Carol Ann Broughton Swearingen reads every single obituary in the Houston Chronicle every day and picked up on the name Mayo and then your name and let me know. We both have lived in Houston for years. Carol and I are going to the Gregory Portland High School Reunion next weekend the 25th. Got to visit with your sister Ann at the last one, don't know if she plans on being there this year. There is a group of GPHS Wildcats that get together here in Houston once a year, usually first of November, alternating between Ray Shotwell and Ronny Brown's home. The group is a bit younger than me but since at that point everyone knew everyone else in school, it is fun to visit with old friends and exchange memories and stories. If you think you might be interested contact me at [email protected]. and I will see you are added to the list. Again, please know I hold you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. As a neighbor growing up on the same street, 1 house apart, our parents were good friends. Although my dad did not hunt , we were on a lease out of Concan with other Sinton families. We had great fun there and at the Garner dances. Wonderful memories.

Clyde and I were in graduate school and then worked together at LWFW. While it was supposed to be work, we had so much fun teaming up on projects that it was pure joy. Later, when Clyde had established his own firm and I had moved on to The Southland Corporation, I tried to convince Clyde to come join me there. After a considerable period of deliberation, he told me that he just couldn't bear to leave his long-term clients. If I were asked to choose just one word that best described Clyde, I would say that word is "loyal." Clyde was loyal to God, to his family, his friends and his clients.
I am so glad that Clyde was able to complete his book before his passing. He told me that he had written that book in order to leave his "footprint," first for his children and also for his chosen profession. Clyde was a sweet, sweet man and the world is a little less mellow now for those of us fortunate enough to have known him.
