I knew John through the Canberra City and Suburban Cricket Association where he played for Teachers. I played against John and was involved in the Association Exec where we drew upon John's expertise and wisdom. He was a lovely man and a great citizen.

We have just heard this evening of John's passing. Please accept our sincere condolences to the Cope family. My wife, Irene worked with John on Christmas Island Area School, Indian Ocean.
I got to meet John in 1986 in his capacity as the Foundation Principal of Lake Ginninderra College. I was transferred from Copland College to Lake Ginninderra College as a foundation mathematics teacher. I had close liaison with John and Sue Vidler in organising the student leadership. John was very supportive and acknowledged my expertise. He was down to earth, humble and an easy person to relate to. Rest in peace, John. Fahmy Michaels

Sincere condolences to all in John's family, he will be greatly missed.
A very sad day for those like me, fortunate enough to be taught French language and culture by John, embracing his love for imparting knowledge and enthusiasm. He inspired me to aim higher in studies, life and our shared love of cricket; lunctime net sessions at Lyneham High and as opponents on Saturday afternoons long remembered. LHS 1960 to 1964.
A true Gentleman and kind friend.
