Bennie C. Hartmann, 80, of Sykesville, died Friday, July 1, 2016 at Future Care - Courtland. Born November 28, 1935 in Deer Creek, Minnesota, he was the son of the late Raymond William Arthur and Bernadette Emmaline Beards Hartmann. He was the loving husband of Mary Lou Hartmann. They had been married for over 58 years. He had retired from Howard County Public Schools as the Director of Pupil Transportation. He had a Masters Degree in administration and supervision. He started his career in education as a physical education teacher at Owings Mills and Franklin Elementary Schools. Bennie joined the International Association of Lions in December, 1966 when he was inducted into the Glade Valley Lions Club. He transferred to the Freedom District Lions Club when he moved to Sykesville in the late 1960s. Lion Ben prided himself in having perfect attendance while a Lion - always attending another club or committee meeting as a "make-up". He was a Lion for over 49 years. Lion Ben was President of the Freedom District Lions Club during the Lions year 1976-1977. Of course, before that, he was 3rd, 2nd and 1st Vice President and served on the Board of Directors for several years. He was our club Secretary for several years - the most demanding job in a Lions club. He chaired several committees, prepared programs, served as newsletter editor and also helped as a worker on many club projects. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest award to be given in the Lions Club. He was also awarded a pyramid by the Wilmer Eye Institute for his support of our club and the Lions Low Vision Center. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter Tammy Marie and husband Jeffrey Keith Richards, Sr., son Randy Scott Hartmann and wife Dena Carol (Rippeon), brother Roger Raymond Hartmann, sister Linda Marie Reeves, grandchildren Jeffrey Keith Richards, Jr., Dylan Scott Hartmann and wife Heather and Dustin Ray Hartmann. He was preceded in death by sister Phillis Mae Hallet. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home, 6028 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg, MD. There will be a memorial service conducted by the Freedom District Lions Club beginning at 7:30 PM on Tuesday. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 AM at Messiah Lutheran Church, 5600 Washington Road, Sykesville, MD with his pastor, the Rev. Michael A. Dubsky, officiating. Interment will follow in Highland View Cemetery. There will be a 1 hour visitation prior to the funeral service at the church. In lieu of flowers, sympathies may be expressed in the form of contributions to the Messiah Lutheran Church or to Freedom District Lions Club, Inc, P.O. Box 1663, Sykesville, MD 21784.

What a shock to see Bennie passed away. I enjoyed all the time I spent with him especially when Clyde and I parked the motorhome in the road in front of your house. There are so many Florida memories also. Bennie helped me so much with my computer, always teaching me new ideas. It was always so much fun to spend time with you Mary and Bennie. I was planning on being at the visitation today. At the last minute I decided I cannot handle the trip. I had the GPS ready to go. Last week I injured my foot and the pain has been unbearable. So I went to the doctor instead of heading on the trip. The x-ray showed nothing broken but I sure did a number on my foot. It will be weeks until healed. I hope at some time to be able to see all of you again. I know this is not an easy time. You are in my prayers.
