Helen L. Malinak (nee Smegiel), age 90, of Frederick, died Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Doey's House in Hagerstown, MD. Born July 5, 1927 in Duryea, PA, she was the daughter of the late Walter P. Smegiel and the late Helen Lipski Smegiel. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Rouse Company in Columbia, MD. Helen was an active member of the VFW Post in Mt. Airy, MD as well as a member of the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Co. Auxiliary, where she was the chaplain for a number of years. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Malinak, of Gettysburg, PA, and her son, Mark Malinak and his wife, Barbara Murphy-Malinak of Cummington, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her sisters, Edna and Betty. A Mass will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mt. Airy, MD on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 11 a.m. Inurnment at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery will occur at a later date in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Auxiliary to the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company, 702 North Main Street, Mt. Airy, MD 21771.
