To the Family
I wish I had the right words to say at this time, but I know there are none. I grieve for the loss of your beloved son and I know that I cannot fathom the pain you must be feeling. Your son will not be forgotten and what he did to help protect our homeland and our freedoms. It was his life that made him a Hero. It was his noble path that made him an American Hero. It was his ultimate sacrifice that made him a Fallen Hero. May God carry him to Heaven on His precious wings and give him a palace to live in. I pray that our Heavenly Father above will grace you with His love, His comfort and His peace. Heaven's Gates now has a new handsome Soldier standing guard. Amen.

Dear Dave and Lucy: I am so very sorry I could not be with you and the rest of our family for David Jr's visitation and funeral today. Please know that you have been in my thoughts and prayers ever since I received the news of David's death in Iraq. I am relying on internet news articles and video footage and am touched by the flags and yellow ribbons etc in his honor. I am happy you are receiving so much support from the community. I am touched by the condolences you are receiving from the men who served with him. It is so hard to be a "California cousin" and so far away from all of you when hugs are needed the most. Be comforted in the belief that David Jr is in heaven now with our other relatives who went before him. I'd like to think he is resting in peace but knowing how our relatives were when they were on earth, they are probably using David Jr's appearance at the pearly gates as another excuse to Party Hardy up in heaven, singing something like Roll Out the Barrel having a barrel of fun up there welcoming another family member into their heavenly fold. I bet they are already teaching David how to play a rousing game of pitch if you didn't already teach him how to play before he got to heaven! His grandpa Allen is probably trying to play a game of Trivial Pursuit with him! I know David Jr received a warm welcome when he arrived and that Grandma Wellinghoff probably shoved St. Peter aside and greeted David Jr. herself. We now have another guardian angel in heaven to watch over us. David Jr tried to protect our family and our country in life as a soldier defending our freedoms, and I am certain he will continue to try to protect us from heaven above. Hold tight to one another back there. I am so deeply sorry. I lost another cousin. You lost your beloved son. Aunt Dorothy lost her grandchild. And on and on -- the loss of a family member impacts all the extended family. We all share your grief. You have my heartfelt sympathy. The loss of someone like David serving in our military is felt by the entire country. David gave his life for our country. In your suffering over his loss be proud of his sacrifice. We are. Love and God's Blessings, Linda

If tears could build a stairway
And memories were a lane
We would walk right up to heaven
And bring you back again

No farewell words were spoken
No time to say goodbye
You were gone before we knew it
And only God knows why

Our hearts still ache in sadness
And secret tears still flow
What it meant to lose you
No one can ever know

But now we know you want us
To mourn for you no more
To remember all the happy times
Life still has much in store

Since you'll never be forgotten
We pledge to you today
A hallowed place within our hearts
Is where you'll always stay

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glint on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Dear Sgt. Luff,

Tonight, as you peacefully lie at rest at Hamilton High School, I stand with an American Flag in my hands in your honor. I'm a member of the Ohio Patriot Guard riders...and stand proudly to honor your service to the United States. You paid dearly soldier. We miss you.

Too frequently, friends of mine might ask, "Ken, why are you standing in the rain or outside the funeral home/visitation venue holding that flag?" My answer is consistant. " There is a brave American in there...that gave his/her life so we can enjoy freedom. His family hurts now. All I HAVE TO DO TONIGHT.. is stand here....sometimes in the rain....sometimes in the cold....sometimes in the heat. You wouldnt belive what The Great American inside did for US.........right before he left this earth.

So I continue standing..........Proudly....and too frequently......because that Great American inside...died to give me the right to make this choice. Additionally, he's my hero because of it."

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not're coming here to me.

I remember when i first met Dave in Washington(state). Dave Flann and my brother Brian all served in the the army together that year and Dave came to my hotel room with with my parents, my brother and Flann and we all sat around playing cards had may of had a few too many drinks. but we all got to know Dave pretty well! He loved to tell jokes and joke around with my mom, dad, Brian and I. Even after Dave had left for his 2nd tour to Iraq I would talk to him on facebook book and we would battle it out about football. he even told me that he was gonna send my son(Damon) a bunch of bangles stuff because the Vikings suck. lol. But in return his little prince was going to get a bunch of Vikings stuff. I will greatly miss all the times that i could have been able to talk with Dave, but i will always remember all the times that I did get to talk to him and give him crap!!! I will never forget you Dave!!! The Miller family loves you very much and we will NEVER forget you!!! RIP
