George Sargent Obituary

Sargent, George Kimball (Kim), III Passed away on June 6th 2019. Kim was the son of the late George K. Sargent, Jr. and Betty Martin Sargent, of Greenwich, CT, and is survived by his siblings, Betsy Hill, William Sargent, Michael Sargent; three nieces; and two nephews. Kim, a graduate of North Andover's Brooks School, class of 1962, went on to earn his BA in Political Science from Hamilton College, class of 1966. Upon completing college, he enlisted in the US Navy and later attended Officer Candidate School. While deployed to South Vietnam, LTJG George K. Sargent III served as the Commanding Officer of a Swift Boat assigned to Coastal Division 13. It was during this tour of duty in 1970 that LTJG Sargent distinguished himself valorously earning the Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device. Upon separating from active duty in 1972, Kim continued to serve his country as an officer with the United States Navy Reserve, retiring in 1996 at the rank of Captain. Within the private sector, Kim led the technical coatings division at Benjamin Moore in Pittsburgh and later built a successful practice as a Senior Financial Adviser with Prudential Bache in Chicago. In retirement, Kim continued to serve his community on multiple levels, most recently on the Board of Directors for the Porchlight Music Theatre. Kim left a lasting legacy of service and commitment to all those that knew him. A private family service is planned for later this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a contribution to the Porchlight Music Theatre, porchlightmusictheatre.org/support.

Not sure what to say?

I first met Kim at the neighborhood coffee shop and over quite a few years was blessed by his friendship. I liked his dry humor, his goodness. He even out of the blue gave me two tickets to an upcoming Cubs game. My girlfriend and I went and found out we were in the fifth row along the first base line. Kim once invited me to the Union League Club for lunch but I never in the end got back to him with a day that worked. I would occasionally get or send him an email and usually he would be suggesting I check out a great movie he just saw. You know he was a really generous, nice person. I went to email him and he never replied. So I checked the obits online and was shocked to find he passed away. Every time I pass the Marlborough where he lived along Lincoln Park I cannot but help to miss the presence of this wonderful individual. If anyone knows what happened to Kim please let me know. I know he had a hip replaced and he said it went extremely well. He looked absolutely good the last time I saw him. He will be truly missed.

Towards the end of 1970, Kim and I served together in Coastal Division 13. He was a very kind soul in a violent enviornment. Steady good judgement. On behalf of quite a few other Swift Boat skippers, Kim will be missed.

Devastated to hear about the passing of Kim. When we first moved to Chicago we got very friendly with him and he just loved our son. Our son was only a few months old and every morning they would share a yogurt and a few times a season would go to Cubs or Wolves games with him. We used to love hearing all his stories but we didn't know half of what we had done in life until we read about him on the Porchlight Theatre website. He will be greatly missed

It was a pleasure to know Kim and talk with him about movies, baseball, camping, theatre and all of his various interests. He is missed. My thoughts go out to his family and hope their memories comfort them at this time and in the future.

My sincere condolences to the family and friend of George Sargent. May the God who binds up the brokenhearted and comfort all who mourn sustain your family during this time. His words at Isaiah 61:1,2.

We at Porchlight Music Theatre in Chicago are heartbroken at Kim's passing. He was a long-time board member who was very active on Porchlight's marketing and finance committees, as well as giving his time to greet patrons coming to performances. We will forever be grateful for his leadership, generosity and enthusiasm.
