Shirley was actively involved in the St. James Mother's Club and was a Troop leader with the Girl Scouts for over twenty years. Shirley was an avid Chicago sports fan with the Cubs being her first love. She always claimed that she was an original "Bleacher Bum" as her favorite spot at Wrigley Field was the old centerfield bleachers. She loved sunbathing in the backyard swimming pool, reading her Harlequin romance books, and working on her crafts.
