Joan was a role model, a mentor and a long-time friend to me. I remember that as soon as the boxes were unpacked when we moved to Park Ridge in 1966, I joined the League of Women Voters and met Joan, who was the president - then and many times after that. We fought the good fights together - for U.S. recognition of China (before Nixon!), for the abolishment of township government in Illinois, for the passage of the 1970 Illinois Constitution; we took our kids to Springfield to lobby for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment during Spring break, when other kids were going to the beach; we marched in Grant Park with our daughters, all in our white outfits, for the ERA; we wore our ERA bracelets. (She even taught me to macrame!) Joan moderated an uncountable number of candidates' forums, so the public would be better informed.
She and Howard were also part of our Park Ridge Community Church Group "X" for over a decade, and what fun we had on the first Friday night of the month.
Joan was a great leader, community activist and a truly nice and accepting person and is missed by so many.

Susan:
I read the news of your mom in the local Niles Spectator and wanted to reach out to let you know that I have such fond memories of Camp Fire Girl events when your mom was our leader. She was a strong female presence in the lives of all of us young girls! I live in Niles (on Elmore!) and walk the Park Ridge neighborhood often. Whenever I pass your old house on Elmore, my memories lead me back to happy times. My condolences to you, Martha and the rest of your family.
