Bernie came to my middle school to share his experiences in World War II in the mid 1990s. His connections to students was amazing and he made an impact on all he spoke to... especially me. Rest in peace, Bernie. Thanks for taking the time to share with these kids.

I only knew Bernie from Courts Plus where he was such a bright light in the morning with fun and interesting conversations. While on the treadmills, he always provided a lively discussion about what books we liked on such subjects as WWII, Art Deco, mysteries and the Knights Templar. Bernie will definitely be missed by the morning crew and I want to wish his family and close friends my condolences. I'm sure, like me, there is now a sad void in their lives.

To the Gardner Family,

On behalf of the Charleston Base SUBVETS and Swamp Fox Chapter SUBVETS WWII, I offer you our sincere condolences on Bernard's passing. We grieve with you on the loss of your loved one and our shipmate. The SUBVETS will have your family in our thoughts and prayers. There is no expiration date on the back of our dolphins and Bernard, who earned his 'fish' when he qualified on USS TAUTOG SS-199 during World War II, will always be remembered as a Brother of the Phin, a member of our Greatest Generation, and a great Patriot.

Bernie was that rare person who could make you smile regardless of your mood.
I enjoyed talking to him very much and learned much about life on a submarine during WWII.
I will miss him and his light very much.
