I am just now learning of Fred Woldt's passing and send my deepest condolences to his family and friends. Fred was essential to the workings of the Just Scholarship Fund, in fact it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did without him. He went above and beyond, keeping in touch with scholars during their college careers and often beyond, mentoring them in ways that helped so many of them keep going - I know, because we have received dozens of letters over the years testifying to that fact.

Fred lives on in every one of those scholars, and for that, along with his great good humor, love of literature, engagement in the world, and loyalty to F. Ward Just's vision, we are so grateful.

So sorry for your loss, Fred was funny and pointed, sometimes at the same time. He was intimidating when I first came onto the staff, he was serious, but then I learned he also enjoyed a good laugh. RIP

Fred lifted everyone around him, professionally, with crisp, expert editing of their copy and guidance on their stories. You never read a sloppily written news story or feature in Fred's section and many of his proteges went on to distinguished careers. It took me three years of hearing his references to the "Blue Pelican" before he let me in on the joke. That's the kind of humor and wisecracking that made newsrooms of old so much fun to work in. My condolences to his family.

Fred was a mentor, colleague and friend. He made The News-Sun and the Waukegan community better places. Condolences to his family.
