Who can ever forget Herb??? Everyone from the Maywood/Melrose Park area knew Chicago Aveenue Foods which was best known as Herb's. I was fortunate to work for Herb , helping to run the store for many years. He would run off to go fishing whenever possible. He knew everyone's name that came into the store and treated them all royally. He always called me "Mairzee" and he was always "Herbie". I still see people at the Melrose Park Jewel who will want ato reminisce about Herb and the store. HE will never be forgotten. Special stores and special people like Herb are really missed. I went to a 125th anniversary celesbration of St. Paul Lutheran Church and so many people attending were old time customers and had special memories of the store and Herb. My condolences to all the family who became like second family to me. God's blessings and peace to you all with love

We will all miss "Herbie". I especially since I helped run the store for him for many years and then he could run off and go fishing, one of his great loves. To him I was always Marzee, not Marilyn. His store was a neighborhood landmark and missed by everyone when gone. He knew everyone by name and I still see people in the Melrose Park Jewel who like to reminisce with me about the store and Herb. We need more people in the world like him. He will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to all of his family who became like a second family to me. God bless you all.

DEAR FAMILY MEMBERS OF HERB,

I have fond memories as a child of shopping with my mother at Herb's store. He use to sell French Bread, with one of the "bare ends" of the bread exposed on the rack. I must have been 3 - 4 y/o, but I would nibble off the crust from the exposed end of the fresh bread and force my mother to purchase The ones I had decided to "mark my own". Yes, Herb knew what was going on every time we came into the store, but that never stopped him from placing me up on the checkout counter and offering up a treat...... from his gum ball machine.
My family and I have told that story 100's of times and it never gets old. Herb will always have a special place in my family's heart. May he RIP.

My deepest sympathy to the Baumgart Family. I first met Herb the summer of 1965 when we moved to North Maywood. He asked who I was, I told him I am new in town, my dad owns Trotters Restaurant, I purchase a 5 cent candy bar. Herb asked if I wanted to flip a coin double or nothing. It cost me 10 cents. He was great and kind man. That building was a big part of my young life.
I will never forget him.
