I was sorry to learn of Katherine Henricis recent passing; my deepest condolences to her many family and friends. While I never met Katherine personally, I enjoyed many phone conversations with her in recent years on that late, great Chicago institution, Henricis Restaurant and her ancestor Philip Henrici who started it in the late 1860s, a few years before the Chicago Fire!
Katherine knew as much as anyone about the history of the famed restaurant. And she was an expert on its collection of European and American paintings that were auctioned off in 1964 and are now displayed in art museums and private collections across the country. On more than one occasion, Katherine and I wondered in amazement how the Art Institute ever let some of those artworks leave Chicago, including a Bouguereau painting, The Young Shepherdess, which now holds a prominent place in the San Diego Museum of Arts collections.
I knew Katherine had been recuperating recently following a fall and I had looked forward to stopping by the family home in Berwyn when she was up for a visit. I had hoped to bring along two paintings our family acquired from the Henrici collection, which she remembered seeing on the restaurants walls when she was a young woman. While Im sorry I wont have that opportunity, I feel fortunate to have heard her stories of Henricis and the people who, over the years, made it Chicagos Most Famous Restaurant. Katherine Henrici was one of a kind, and she will definitely be missed!

May words of love, kindness, and caring wrap you in the comfort of peace. No words can truly resolve the emotions of death. In due time one will adjust to a degree, but the emptiness continues. Let the words of the Greatest Authority help you to look forward to life in a peaceful new world with all of your loved ones restored to the earth without their having to die again.
