Elmeretta Brown Obituary

ELMERETTA OLLIE MOYES, BROWN 6/06/1928 to 7/1/2018 Elmeretta Ollie Moyes, Brown was born in Castro Valley, CA. She was the second of three daughters of Kenneth Elmer Moyes and Lola Princess Moyes. As a young girl, Elmeretta's family returned to Paradise, CA, the place where her mother's ancestors date back to the mid 1870s. She resided in Paradise with her parents and sisters, Harriet Sadie Moyes, Krueger and Marilyn June Moyes, Evatt until she married her high school sweetheart, Richard Vern, "Dick" Brown of Chico, CA. in 1947. It was said, that Elmeretta "was a dancer, swimmer and gymnast from the time she could walk." She loved sports, adventures and people. She was even known to arrive from Paradise to high school in Chico, on the back of Dick's 1941 Indian motorcycle. She was an active member of Chico High School's Class of 1946 and hosted class a reunion for the "46'ers" at her ranch-home in North Chico. While in high school, she was a three sport athlete. Additionally, she played competitive softball for the Chico Peppers. Elmeretta's interests were broad and diverse. As a girl, her parents were active in the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star in Oakland and Paradise, CA. She was very proud that she and her mother were the first Mother Advisor and Worthy Advisor of the Paradise Assembly of Rainbow Girls and eventually became a Lifetime Member as well. Elmeretta began her college career at CSU Chico in the Fall Semester of 1946 and completed her degrees there in Physical Education and Recreation with a Secondary teaching credential in 1957. She continued her education and earned a Counseling credential in 1979. While at Chico State University, she participated in field hockey, golf, archery, tennis, swimming, and dance/gymnastics. The 11 year journey in her college education included the birth of her daughter, Dana Brown, Brumley. Elmeretta was also a Life Guard and Red Cross swimming instructor at local pools, including Bidwell Park's Five and One Mile, Chico Junior High's facility, private pools and served as Water-Front director for the Girl Scout's camp located at Gold Lake, CA. She also loved the friendships she developed through charitable organizations such as the Chico Junior Women's Club and the AAUW, University Wo-men's Association and the local Republican Women's organization, to name a few. Elmeretta's public edu-cation teaching career began in 1957 at Durham High School where she developed the first Women's Physical Education department. In 1980, Elmeretta took over the DHS Counseling Department and remained in that position until 1996. Her students, colleagues and career were extremely important to her. "Teach", as many called her, believed that each and every one of her students deserved the most positive and productive educational experience possible and she gave 100% of her efforts to make that happened for them. During her career at Durham High, she stayed connected to CSU Chico by mentoring 83 CSUC student-teachers in the Master Teacher program. Durham High's annual Elmeratta Brown Volley-ball tournament honors her each year. Elmeretta was also inducted into the Chico Sports Hall of Fame and Chico State University Sports Hall of Fame, the latter of which, she served as President multiple terms. In addition to the many recognitions through her athletic career, Elmeretta was awarded a CIF Gold Card Life Membership. She was a repeat Rotary Camp Royal Counselor, was recognized for community service by the Durham Rotary Club and became an Honorary Life Member of FFA. She held state and local positions including chapter President of a local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a Women in Education Inter-national Organization. Her interest in history and genealogy lead to becoming an active member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in October of 2000. The friendships she made throughout her life were very special to her. Elmeratta also treasured her private life especially after retirement. She was an avid bridge player, and she attended every sports and equine event her adored grandson, Tracy Brumley and granddaughter in-law Amanda, participated in. She loved traveling with family all over the US, in good weather and bad, on planes and in the trucks because she was not one to miss out on the action. She was very proud of her son in-law Terry Brumley and always enjoyed the gentlemanly attention and mild teasing he bestowed up her. She relished driving her little pimento green BMW sports car and enjoyed life to the fullest. A service will be held at Brusie Funeral Home, 626 Broadway Chico, CA, Sunday, July 15th at 2 P.M. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to Roses and Ivy Elder Care, for the Elmeretta Brown Activity Program, 853 Manzanita Court Chico, CA 95926 or your favorite charity.

"Teach" was certainly a favorite educator of the girls of Durham High School from 1957 forward. My sister graduated in 1961 and always talked of her time with Mrs. Brown and school. She left a definite mark in the lives of all students back in the day. Condolences to the entire family.
