Peter Vangel Obituary

1935 – 2017

It is with heavy hearts that the family announce the death of Peter “Spooks” Vangel at the age of 82. He passed away peacefully in the TBRHSC surrounded by family on Saturday, October 14, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer.

Peter was born on June 29, 1935 in Fort William, Ontario to Helen and Peter Vangel. Peter met the love of his life, Beverley and they were married on September 14, 1957, recently celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. They went on to have three children: Bob, Ken and Vicki.

Peter worked at the Great Lakes Paper Mill in Thunder Bay for 38 years and was along time member of Council 1447 Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed the times spent socializing and working the Sunday spaghetti dinners.

Peter had many interests and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, travelling all over Canada and the USA, gardening, hunting, fishing, riding the lawn mower and the casino. Peter loved the casino and frequent trips to Hinckley. After every trip, he would tell stories of his winnings and always saying, “I should have bet the max.”

Peter was blessed with three beautiful grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He would brag to anyone and everyone about the kids. He was always taking them on trips to Grand Portage, Grand Marais and Duluth as well as patridge hunting, swimming, frequent trips to McDonalds and East Side Mario's and out for Saturday breakfasts. Their Papa never missed a birthday, graduation or any type of celebration, which is no surprise as to his last words of “how are the kids?” Paula, Cody and Hanna will truly miss their Papa and will cherish all of the memories of him, especially fighting over who got to sit in Papa's chair.

Peter's sense of humour was always very blunt and unique, which is a quality that will be deeply missed. That sense of humour was with him until the very end, keeping the family entertained and laughing.

He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 60 years, Beverley (nee Bailey); sons Robert (Leeann) and Kenneth; daughter Vicki (Terry); grandchildren Paula (Justin), Cody (Rachel) and Hanna; brother Rudy (Mary Anne); sister Bernie; brothers-in-law Bert (Rosemary) and Ernie; his best friend and dog Peaches as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Peter was predeceased by his parents Peter and Helen (nee Janik) Vangel; father and mother-in-law Ernest and Anna (nee Pechiwa) Bailey; sisters Elizabeth, Theresa, Pam and Helen and sister-in-law Jean Bailey.

We would like to express our utmost gratitude to the staff at the TBRHSC on floor 1A for their dedication and compassion towards our family during this time of sorrow. Another sincere thank you to Dr. Kisselgoff and Dr. Sandoval for taking exceptional care of Peter.

A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, October 19, 2017 from 12:00-3:00pm at the Columbus Centre, 301 South May Street. Honourary Pallbearers are Arthur DeCorte, Lawrence Timko, Rudy Vangel, Bob Vangel, Ken Vangel and Cody Vangel.

Should friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Paws for Love Dog Rescue – Thunder Bay or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street, Thunder Bay.
