David and I were in the class of 1970 at A.C. Reynolds. He was a "man" among boys. We played basketball together for Sonny Hollifield. He was the "hatchet" man in practice. He was better known for his football and was one of Frank Maennle's twenty boys . Jeff "ballplayer" Burleson, Alan "aggie" Sawyer, Clement Crowe, Pete Leonard, O.J. Degraffenreid, and others would hit you so hard. David was at our basketball reunion at Lake Julian several years ago. That was the last time I saw him. Great memories of a gentle giant.

Diane, I grew up with Charles (David as I knew him) in the Oakley community of Asheville. We attended schools together, elementary and high school, and played organized baseball many summers along the way (He was a great athlete!) He was a friend, always ready to listen, didn't have a lot to say, but when he did it was worth hearing. I am so sad to hear of his passing. I know you and your family are in the midst of the grief that comes with death, please know that my prayers and thought are with you all. Richard Moore

I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I had not seen him in 35+ years ... probably around the time he moved to Virginia. I'll always remember his great sense of humor in addition to being tough as nails. I am so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace my friend.

I am sorry to learn of Dave's passing. I grew up in Oakley with Dave, Gail and Tim. I did not get to meet Diane. Tim, I just read about Gail's passing in 2019. I am sorry for you and your family for the loss of both of your siblings. My condolences to Diane and all of the kids and grand kids. Rest in peace Gail and Dave.

To the Garland Family: David was my childhood friend, and even though I hadn't seen him since childhood, I thought of him often. Our years together as children were remarkable, and I recorded them in my memoir, The Life of Mikey. Those were fun times. Rest in peace, old friend.
