Russ Mallonee
High Point - Russell Gaston Mallonee of Old Mill Road, High Point, NC, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Shannon Gray Rehabilitation Center, Jamestown. Russ was a loving husband, dad, and Paw Paw to four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was born November 1, 1921 to William Thomas Clendenon Mallonee and Myrtle Gaston Mallonee in Candler, NC. He graduated from Candler High School and was a US Army veteran of WW II, from 1942-46. He fought in Guadalcanal in the South Pacific where he was seriously wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. Serving his country was always a source of pride for him. Mr. Mallonee was a retired business manager for Southern Oil Company, was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, and a charter member of Colonial Country Club. He especially enjoyed cherished time with his family, playing golf, watching western movies, and watching his favorite teams, the Carolina Tar Heels and the Atlanta Braves.
He married Margaret Louise Bell from Asheville, NC in 1942, and they were married twenty-seven years until her passing. In 1970 he married Arvia Rollins Upton of High Point, NC. They were married thirty-seven years until her passing in 2007.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Ronda Foster and her husband, Jim, of Greensboro, Carol Sams and her husband, Jim, Jr. of High Rock Lake; four grandsons, Darren Sams of High Rock Lake, Jim Sams III and his wife, Melissa, of Wallburg, Dave Foster of Greensboro, Al Foster and his wife, Sara, of Knoxville, TN; three great grandsons, Jay Sams, Logan Sams, Jackson Foster; and many dear nieces and nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents and wives, preceding him in death were; five brothers and three sisters.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to his home caregivers, the doctors and nurses at HP Regional Hospital and Shannon Gray Rehab, our family and our church families, friends, and neighbors for their love, support, and prayers during his illness.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00, Saturday, October 12th at Cumby Funeral Home, 1015 Eastchester Dr., High Point, NC. A service to celebrate Russ' life will be held on Sunday, October 13th at 2:00 pm at Montmorenci United Methodist Church, 89 Old Candler Town Rd., Candler, NC, with Reverend Lisa Hartzog Hannah officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Odell Dillard, Jim Fox, Lane Mallonee, Chuck Mallonee, Al Foster, Dave Foster, Jim Sams III and Darren Sams.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Russ' memory may be sent to: Ft. Bragg Fisher House, 12 Bassett St., Ft. Bragg, NC 28307. Online condolences can be made at www.cumbyfuneral.com. Arrangements by Cumby Family Funeral Service of High Point.
