Thomas Ray Martin, 57, Topeka, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. He was born June 5, 1945, in Topeka, the son of Willis E. Martin and Betty L. Williams Martin. He grew up in Tecumseh and graduated from Shawnee Heights High School in 1963. Mr. Martin was a distinguished veteran of the U.S. Armed Services. He was a truck driver for Fleming Foods in Topeka for more than 30 years, and was a truck driver for ABF out of Kansas City for the last nine years. He married Betty Benefiel in Garnett on June 5, 1971. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Martin, Lansing; and Dr. Patrick Martin, San Antonio; three grandchildren, Zachery, Nathan and Elizabeth; his father, Willis "Bill" Martin, Sun City, Ariz.; and a brother, Tony Martin, Sun City, Ariz. His mother preceded him in death in 1999. Mr. Martin was a member of American Legion Post No. 1, Topeka and the Teamsters union; former president of SCABA in Topeka, and coach of the Pistols Little League baseball team for 10 years. He was instrumental in developing the Instructional League for 5- and 6-year-olds at SCABA. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel. Mr. Martin will lie in state at the funeral home Tuesday after noon. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
