CHARLES HERRON Obituary

born October 6, 1936 died peacefully at his home on September 28, 2018. A native of Cleveland, he attended Orange High School and received a Cleveland Foundation Scholarship to attend Oberlin College and the Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in San Francisco, where he married and began a family. He was a doctor for Peace Corps volunteers in Bangladesh before returning to California. After joining the Epidemic Intelligence Service, he moved with his family to Ghana in Africa from 1969-71 as a participant in the global campaign to eradicate smallpox. He then spent four years with the Iowa Department of Public Health, before moving to Atlanta in 1976 to work at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Upon retirement from the federal government, he continued his career as an epidemiology advisor returning in 1987 to Cleveland, where he worked for the City of Cleveland and then joined the MetroHealth System as a physician for Urgent Care and Internal Medicine. He retired to Rocky River in 2003 where he stayed active in EIS circles. He engaged in his love of woodworking and traveled frequently, with summers often spent in Sweden. He was a great outdoorsman, caring husband, devoted father, and public servant. He is survived by his wife, Birgitta, three sons Stephan, Mark and Thomas, brothers Richard and David, and six grandchildren. According to his wishes, his ashes were scattered in Lake Erie. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Shocked and saddened to read Chuck's name today in the USPHS Taps section of the latest Coast Guard/PHS Retiree Newsletter.

I will always remember him at the microphone during the annual EIS Conference pen and conference abstract book in hand, looking out over his reading glasses as he asked questions of the presenters.

I am grateful to Chuck for his (curmudgeonly) prodding to continually improve our scientific presentations.

My condolences to his family.

Dear Birgitta and Family,
A number of us former Peace Corps Volunteers fondly remember you and Chuck when we served in Bangladesh from 1963 to 65. We appreciated your warm hospitality and Chuck's superior medical care in an area where we were susceptible to a number of serious diseases and depended on Chuck's expertise. We enjoyed visiting with Chuck at the 50th PC anniversary in 2011. We can see from his obituary that he lived a life of service and we pray for God's comfort for all of you.
