Wayne was a friend and tutor to me as I began my career teaching at Purdue. He was kind, thoughtful and gentle with us newbies on the faculty. Wayne and Joyce remained treasured friends to Anella and I, and to our children for 50+ years. What a great teacher, enthusiastic geneticist, and genuine friend we will remember. The Keim scholarships at Purdue and other institutions are fitting tributes to a great man.

Wayne threatened to adopt me if my father failed to visit Colorado in a timely manner. All a part of the fabulous Agronomy family, Wayne was ready and willing to be my second dad. Just like my own family, he would kid me, offer advice and shower me with his generosity. I was honored to be a guest in their home many times. If I think about it, I can hear him humming. Sending love to all of the family.

Dear Joyce and family, We send our condolences and love to you at this time of challenge. Wayne was a good man, colleague, and friend. He led the way by being a superb teacher at Purdue. He was an outstanding administrator in our department and always treated me and others with great respect and kindness. He always encouraged me in my teaching responsibilities. When he retired as department head I missed him greatly. Although since his retirement as department head, I haven't had much association with him, I have fond memories of our previous associations.

I know that being released from his physical conditions recently, he has gone to a more pleasant circumstance, and will be waiting for you to join him in a joyous reunion.

May the Lord be with you in the days ahead and give you comfort and strength to carry on, with fond memories of your lives together with a man of his caliber.

Sincerely, Burns and Elaine Sabey
