Clarice Schorzman Obituary

CLARICE LORRAINE (WALLACE) SCHORZMAN
May 3, 1938 ~ January 7, 2017

Clarice Lorraine Wallace Schorzman, a longtime educator and leader who spent 42 years in education, died January 7, 2017 at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She was 78.
Born May 3, 1938 to Genevieve Lorraine Isom and James Boyd Wallace in Colville, Washington, she graduated from West Valley High School in 1956. She attended Eastern Washington State College, and in 1958 she married Lee West Schorzman.
Their sons, Boyd West and Britt West, were born in 1960 and 1962. She taught for nine years at Ritzville High, and after divorce and a move to Oregon, taught for seven years at Vernonia High. From 1981-1996 she was a principal at schools in Lincoln City, OR, Toledo, OR and Washougal, WA. She retired in 2007 after 11 years at Colton Middle School. She was named Oregon Middle School Principal of the Year in 2006.
In retirement, Clarice pursued her lifelong passions and traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. For 29 years, she hosted an off-beat (some would say bizarre) adult Easter egg hunt. A lifelong baseball fan and an avowed liberal, she was creative and often rebellious of conventions and wanted to know how everything worked.
She leaves behind sons, Boyd West Schorzman, 56, of Seattle, WA and Britt West Schorzman, 54, of Grants Pass, OR; daughter, Debbie Sokol Schorzman, 50, of Seattle; sister, Barbara Clausen, 71, of Kelso, WA; two grandsons, Benjamin West Schorzman, 28, of Eugene, OR and Byron West Schorzman, 26, of Vancouver, WA; and one great-granddaughter, Lillian Rae Schorzman.
Clarice's family will host a party in celebration of her life January 28, 2017 for all of those who knew her in lieu of a memorial service. Please email Debbie at dlschorzman@ gmail.com for details and to be added to the guest list.
Any cards of sympathy can be sent to 2718 SE 138th Loop Vancouver, WA 98663. The family asks instead of flowers or money, please donate to Planned Parenthood.
Please sign Clarice's guestbook at www.columbian.com/obits.

My condolences to Clarice's family. I had the privilege of working with Clarice in Washougal. Her dedication to students was obvious to all as was her kindness and caring towards her co-workers. Please find comfort in knowing the positive impact she had on so many of us.

I loved this women. She was an honest and direct person. She was in my life at those sometimes strange teenage years. She often reminded me that it is ok to be myself. Once after a third try at sewing a shirtwaist dress she told me I was not a seamstress but I was an excellent writer. She was spot on. She touched so many lives

In life there is always that one high school teacher that helps mold a teenager into an amazing future. Ms. Schorzman did that for me. She was my English and Home Ec teacher in Vernonia. She was very supportive and told me the sky is the limit. I've had an amazing life and sometimes contribute it back to that high school teacher.

Clarice was my friend, my mentor, and a true sage on the stage of life. We worked together in two states and two different school districts. I was privileged to hunt for specialty eggs for many years as she performed the duties of the Master of The Hunt.
Part of her brilliance was that she made time for other people to share their ideas, concerns, and triumphs. Clarice helped people to grow by supporting them in their discovery of what they needed to learn and helping them to develop a path to get there. She felt strongly about natural consequences providing a better way to change behavior. Respect was an important word and an action of how she treated others and how she expected people to treat each other. I have communicated with teachers who worked with her as far away as Tennessee. Teachers with whom I have spoken have talked about how she made them better teachers. Clarice will have a legacy of guiding people to be the best they can be and the people she guided guiding others while maintaining a caring, thoughtful, and committed attitude toward the individual. She will be remembered when I see an Easter Egg, a rabbit, and think of the Coalition of Essential Schools. But most of all when I hear her wisdom as her voice in my head.

Clarice was an amazing, unique person and one outstanding principal. It was lucky for me (Steve) that she was available for hire when I became the Colton superintendent in 1996. Clarice turned that middle school into an outstanding educational environment culminated by her selection as the Oregon Middle School Principal of the Year. The ten years we worked together was a sometimes wild ride but a rewarding experience. The same can be said for the Easter egg hunts.
