Mr Shuford was one of my favorite teachers. He was an asset to Shumway. His kindness will always be remembered. What a wonderful man.

Seeing this obituary and this familiar face brought back many fond memories of my three years at Shumway from 1960-1963. We were so lucky to have been looked after and nurtured by Mr. Shuford. After all this time, I can still hear his laugh, see his smile, and be thankful for his advice. The best of good wishes to his family and friends, who I know will miss him.

I had the pleasure of having Hugh as a boss for a number of years at Covington. He was a wise leader with a crack sense of humor. He was also a fantastic writer and his commentaries in the Columbian were spot on. It's always difficult to lose one of the greats but Hugh left a Legacy. He left us all better for having known him.

I enjoyed the years I was a counselor at Covington with an office directly across the hall from the principal. He was a great guy to work with and for.

I met Hugh while teaching in Evergreen. He was a very positive influence in the District. He was a good, honest man. His letters to the editor in the Columbian were always well written and good reading. I will miss him.

I worked with Hugh Shuford at Covington Junior High School during the last two years before he retired. I interviewed for a Guidance Counselor position in October of 1990 and did terribly. After being told I was not being considered for the job, I asked Hugh for some advice on how I could better present myself in an interview. He was most gracious in his feedback and his words and genuine support were priceless. A few weeks later, I was called back for a second interview and was hired for the job. I will always be grateful to Hugh for his kindness and confidence in me, giving me my first job in Evergreen that would lead to a 27-year career in the district. During the short time I worked under him, he shared much of his philosophy and beliefs about effective public school education gathered from his years of experience, and his wisdom influenced me over all the years of my Evergreen employment. Thank you, Hugh, for making a profound difference in my career.

Hugh was the principal at Covington Jr. High School where I taught for one year. During that time, we became friends, and I enjoyed his wonderful leadership. We remained in touch over the years, and I am very sorry to hear of his passing. He was a remarkable man, and a good friend. My condolences to all who love him.

Wise, funny, kind. Think of a positive adjective and you could apply it to Hugh. He was a dear man and will be missed.
