To the Smith family, I bring my deepest sympathy for the loss of a wonderful young man that had drive and ambitions of making a difference for African American people. He was well respected and very smart and was not afraid to speak up. I met Bernal several years ago ias members of the National Newspapers Publihers Assocition. We became friends and hung out together quarterly during our conferences. In addition we've spoken on the phone many times in between. He was a great guy and a good friend with a big heart. The last time we got together was in June 2017 in Chicago. He was loved and will be missed by so many. God doesn't make any mistakes. He is certainly a soldier in God's army. He will be missed by so many but his names goes on. A friend indeed David Miller, Los Angeles.

Dear Smith Family,

I am still at a loss for words. We have truly lost a jewel in the Memphis community. Bernal's passion for life, justice and people goes unspoken. May God continue to bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Love Dr. Audrey Elion

Larger than life with wings like an eagle; brilliant leader and friend. The bond of brotherhood between you and Steve Webster over the years was golden. Thank you for that. Abundantly grateful, G. Webster
