Hi Carmen,
I am so sorry to have just heard of Gid's passing last October. I was just invited to the reception honoring his legacy through the dedication of the Gid Smith Community Room at the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. That is how I heard. Gid was truly the only person I ever considered as a mentor in my professional life. I looked up to him (figuratively speaking) and admired him on so many levels. While I am greatly enjoying life in the Asheville area, I look back on those years at CFGM as some of my best. I hope you are doing well and settling in to your new life. My condolences go out to you, your sons and the extended family.
Sincerely,
Glenn Cox

To the Smith Family:

My sincere condolences to Carmen, Jonathon, and the rest of the family. Gid and I had a close relationship over a number of years, with me in city government and he leading MIFA and the Community Foundation. I admired greatly his ability to come up with and to organize and guide effectively much needed services for many of the less fortunate in Memphis. Mary and I visited with him and Carmen a couple of times, and I did one final time in 2006. He was always a gracious host, and he and I had a great final get together.

With love and appreciation,

Jerrold and Mary Moore

To Carmen, Jonathan and the entire Smith family,

My heart and thoughts are with all of you as you say goodbye to Gid. I was fortunate to reunite with him in 2005, after many years of not knowing each other's whereabouts, and spent precious time with him while he was in the Memphis care facility.
I will miss his presence on earth. He was always one of my very favorite people. So sorry I will miss the service.
