John Outlan Obituary

John Edward Outlan, M.D.

Collierville, TN

John Edward Outlan, M.D., 85, passed away at his home in Collierville on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. Dr. Outlan is survived by his wife, Carolyn Harrell Outlan, his two sons, John Booth Outlan (Janey) and William Blair Outlan (Johna), his grandson, William Blair Outlan, Jr., and his sister, Gayle Outlan of Dallas, TX. He also leaves his four stepsons, Bill Cox, Wright Cox, Robert Cox, and Jim Cox and his stepdaughter, Melinda Hall. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arch Booth and Hazel Outlan, and his three brothers, Arch Booth Outlan, Jr., Stoughton Allen Outlan, and William Franklin "Pete" Outlan.

Dr. Outlan was born August 30, 1931, in Jackson, TN. He graduated from Union University in 1953. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee and completed his internship at City of Memphis Hospital.

In 1962, after practicing family medicine in Somerville, Dr. Outlan and his brother, Pete, established Shelby East Clinic and Hospital in Collierville. This was at a time when there were no hospitals "out East." John and Pete did everything from fractures to delivering babies and minor surgery.

Dr. Outlan gave generously of his time and medical expertise on mission trips to Mexico and Guatemala and to the Church Health Center in Memphis. He attended Collierville United Methodist Church for many years.

In 1998, he was selected by the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians as Family Physician of the Year. He was further honored by the TAFP by being elected its President for the year 2000. In addition, he held leadership positions in the Tennessee Medical Association.

Dr. Outlan served for 16 years as a member of the Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen and as Vice Mayor of Collierville for six years. An avid hunter and fisherman, Dr. Outlan also enjoyed gardening. After he retired, he could often be found working in his beautiful yard.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 13 at the Sanctuary on the Square with interment in Magnolia Cemetery in Collierville.

Memorials may be sent to Collierville United Methodist Church Sanctuary on the Square Restoration Fund, 454 W. Poplar, Collierville, TN 38017.

Worked with this lovely man back in the 90's at the small clinic in Collierville. We had so much fun with Dr. John and Dr. William
