My favorite memory of Monica? She had just moved to NM and AnneMarie and I took her with us to the Balloon Fiesta. I was grousing about the cold and the time of day, but then balloons started flaring into the predawn sky and I looked at Monica, transfixed by the unfolding ascension, a smile of sheer delight spreading across her face. I realized in that moment how lucky we were to be alive in that time, and place. This delight in the constant unfolding of life and the ability to see beauty in things I often took for granted is what I will miss the most.

I saw Monica every two weeks for almost eight years. I always looked forward to her visits. I would straighten up the house and put on classical music to try to make her task a little easier, and we would catch up on what was going on in our lives. Over those years, I brought a lot of new art into the house. I took great pleasure in her enthusiastic response to each new piece, as we discussed its merits and whether or not it was located in exactly the right spot. We had a game that we played, where I wouldn't tell her when there was something new to be discovered. Sometimes I would hear a giggle of recognition from another room, and sometimes she would keep me in suspense until she was ready to leave, before letting me know she had found it. After Monica left for the day, I always felt renewed in my space and in my spirit. Our lives intersected in a unique way and our familiar interaction enriched my life. I will miss her greatly.

It is true that Monica was sweet, kind, and gentle; it is all together fitting that these qualities should and did define her. But for me, it was her wit and dry sense of humor that were just so great. I love it when you see someone coming and you smile because you know that pretty soon you will be laughing! For me, that was Monica. I miss her making me laugh. Love and light Ms. Monica, sleep well.

Monica was amazing- we were best friends, confidants, each other's rock when necessary, devil's advocate, holder of each other's dreams and stories, we triumphed many difficulties together...someone that I thought would be there to walk through all of my life with... Monica would stop by sometimes daily, sometimes weeks in between...always her smiling face at my door... we were ALWAYS there for each other, even when we differed, maybe especially then! This bond broken has left a hole deeper than I knew possible... She was a true and loving sister, the best person I have ever known... Thank you, dear Monica, for your enduring love... Dance, sister, dance...
