To the Smith family my condolences. I worked with Bill at Shady Lane for 20+ years. As my principal, he was a caring man. Bill did not see color, disability or economic background in the children placed in his care. He only saw children who needed love, understanding and guidance. In his staff, he saw colleagues not charges. He welcomed our input and point of view. He made attending school, for student or staff, fun. We had Christmas sing-a-longs, trivia contests, and memorable science fairs
under his leadership. And he even made a year long attendance of a German Shepard, named Fuzzy, a daily teaching opportunity for me and steered a few youngsters toward the dog for purpose of commiseration when said students could only share the lost of a pet with a creature who would understand their pain.
Elementary schools are suppose to be in the memory creating business and toward this end, Bill fulfilled his duty as Principal Teacher well. What more can be asked of a person that they performed their job well and in so doing they enriched the lives of those around him.
God bless..
