I am so grateful to Professor Lang and I refer to him frequently as a passionate and empathetic professor, who helped me in a crossroad of my life. I had skipped a major test in his class in my Freshman year (I was a math major), and met with him to explain I had no good excuse. I had really been thoroughly enjoying his class, but I found myself questioning my purpose of school at all. He kindly reminded me of my mathematical gift and that the choice of dropping out or worse, flunking out of school mid-semester would negatively affect me forever. He suggested at a minimum finishing out the semester and to re-evaluate the situation then. He amazingly let me take that test and so my academic record stayed intact. I did what he recommended and ended up staying at Fairfield for one more year... still confused on my direction, but finishing the year. I then attended a semester at U. Missouri Columbia, with a completely contrasting story with a professor after a misunderstanding of the nomenclature on a physics test and explaining this clearly was not a reflection of my capabilities, to which he replied he could not make any exceptions with over 1000 students in the class. So after that semester, I took a semester off to do some soul searching and interviewing lots of people. I decided to finish up at Santa Clara University with a Combined Science and emphasis in Computer Science degree... pretty much unheard of in those days. I even went on to get a graduate degree. So, I am so grateful to Professor Lang for encouraging me on staying in school. Thanks and so so sorry to his family for your loss.

Dear Mary Beth:

I just want you to know that George is in the thoughts and prayers of his many friends here. For the past 14 years, Ed O'Neill and George have been the brains behind the Annual GE Connecticut High School Computer Contest; but, we all know they were much more. They were the heart and soul of the effort, helping it become a model for state-wide academic competitions. GE provided a little muscle, a few dollars and a slightly better than average facility.

I have many fond memories of talking with George during those annual events. He was just such a warm and friendly person. I'm sure that the many happy and loving memories you have, along with the support of your family and friends will help you through this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Gus Serra
