Duane "Bouncer" Bauer, 94, passed away at Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney, Neb. on April 20, 2021.

Born Jan. 9, 1927, Bouncer was the oldest of four children born to Walter and Olga (Jones) Bauer.

He grew up in rural Litchfield and went to school through the eighth grade. His dad told him he would buy a tractor if he stayed home to farm after his eighth grade year.

Bouncer continued to farm north of Litchfield with his brother, Chinnie, until 1981 when he moved to Litchfield and turned the farm over to his two nephews, Brad and Brian Slocum.

He served in the U.S. Army from September, 1950 to September, 1952. While serving, Bouncer was preparing to be an Airborne Ranger when he was injured while making a practice jump from a tower. The military discovered his mechanical talents while recovering from that injury and he became the motor pool expert.

Bouncer continued to tinker in his garage in his retirement and was a gun enthusiast, building guns from scratch.  He enjoying trap shooting, fishing, and going to gun shows with Dean Kohls.

He enjoyed handing out candy to anyone he could find that would take it, especially at Halloween. He was a great storyteller. We all loved to hear the stories of his youth and the time he spent in the Army.

Bouncer was preceded in death by his parents; brother John (Chinnie) Bauer; and sister Linda Slocum.

Survivors include his sister Gloria Mason of Lincoln; brother-in-law Gerald (Pat) Slocum of Litchfield; nephews Brad (JoAnn) Slocum and Brian Slocum of Litchfield, and Monte Mason of Lincoln; nieces Dori (Kent) Ropers of Axtell, and Mandi Mason of Lincoln: and many great-nephews and great-nieces.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2021 at the Litchfield Cemetery in Litchfield with Pastor Loren Boley officiating. There will be no visitation as the family has honored Bouncer's wishes to be cremated. Lunch after the services will be held at the Litchfield Community Building.
