NEWPORT NEWS - Alese Southerland Biggs, 91, went to meet her Lord on Thursday, March 19, 2009.
She was born Dec. 21, 1917, in Warwick County to Evelyn and Will S. Southerland Sr. Miss Southerland married Wiley D. Biggs on Jan. 15, 1933, and resided in Newport News her entire life. Mr. Biggs passed away Jan. 9, 1997.
Alese was a hairdresser for 50 years and was co-owner of her own beauty salon for more than 10 years. She held several offices in the Peninsula Hairdressers Association including President.
Mrs. Biggs enjoyed people and loved to laugh and talk with friends, especially her Windward Towers friends. She was a devoted wife and mother, and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and also attended Calvary Baptist Church with her sister-in-law, Lillian Spencer.
Mrs. Biggs is survived by a son, David W. Biggs, and wife, Toni; three grandchildren, Kristen Jones (husband Larry), Joy Simonson (husband Brian), and Dana Biggs (wife Susan); five great-grandchildren, Travis, Emilee and Dustin Jones, Trevor Simonson, and Katie Biggs; nephews, Marlin Eby, Will S. Southerland III, Bill Waters; and nieces, Connie Willis, Pat Turner, Ann Wright, Betty Hastings.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Riverside-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 7415 River Road, Newport News, VA 23607, with Pastor David Highlander officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
