POQUOSON - Bettie Joan Evans Messier, 82, a native & lifelong resident of Poquoson, passed away Friday, August 26, 2016 after a hard fought year long battle with cancer. Bettie was Poquoson High School graduate, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class, Agnes Carmines Circle, and served on the Senior Ministries Committee. She retired from N.A.S.A. in 1991 as an Administrative Assistant after ten years. Bettie volunteered at the V.A in Hampton, and was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 273, serving as President, Vice-president, and chairman of many committees. She enjoyed shopping, traveling, reading, and going out to eat. Bettie was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Roger Messier; parents, Harry & Sallie Evans; brother & sister-in-law, Howard & Steve Evans; and brother-in-law, John Henley. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Warren, Joan Fournier, Sallie Messier, and Kristi Jackson (Eric); sister, Mary Jack Henley; grandchildren, Lindsey Stirneman (Jonathan), Joe Fournier (Callie), Kyle Warren, Danielle Herbener, Reilly Jackson, Cameryn Jackson, Ryan Herbener, and Avery Jackson; great-grandchild, Mason Fournier; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends Monday, 7-8:30 PM, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, and other times at her home. A Celebration of Bettie's life will be held Tuesday, 10:00 AM, at Trinity United Methodist Church, led by Rev. Charles R. Stacy and Rev. Carol Bookwalter. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1294 Poquoson Ave., Poquoson, VA, 23662.
